One of the hardest parts of trading is the stop loss. They’re hard emotionally as we hate being wrong. They’re hard financially as we hate losing money.
It’s also hard to know where to position them in order to limit downside while leaving space for a small retracement before the position moves in your favour.
In this JSE Power Hour experienced trader Petri Redelinghuys of Herenya Capital Advisors focuses on how he executes stop losses. His preferred stop loss methodology is the average true range (ATR) but he’ll also look at the 2% risk rule, dow theory, gaps and longer-term patterns.
