The Daily Trades 25/08/2027

Market Overview

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

U.S. equity markets edged slightly higher overnight, while commodities faced broad-based downward pressure—led by palladium, which fell 1.97%. Energy markets also pulled back, with Brent Crude slipping despite new geopolitical friction after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced “Operation Economic Outcast.” The aggressive sanctions campaign targets third-party countries and shadow-fleet brokers facilitating trade with Iran, threatening secondary sanctions and total exclusion from the U.S. dollar financial system. On the domestic front, the quarterly FTSE/JSE index review sees Aspen Pharmacare added to the SA Top 40, replacing Woolworths. Meanwhile, Gold Fields released its interim earnings this morning alongside a trading business update from Afrimat.

Bitcoin

Bitcoin surged above $80,000 for the first time since May, gaining over 20% in a week as investors turned to hard assets amid dollar debasement, persistent inflation, and aggressive U.S. debt spending. Crypto-linked equities rallied strongly alongside the move, with MicroStrategy and MARA Holdings jumping as higher Bitcoin prices directly boosted their treasury valuations and mining margins.

Local Stocks

Following the latest quarterly FTSE/JSE index review, Aspen Pharmacare will be added to the South Africa Top 40 Index, effectively replacing Woolworths.

Gold Fields Ltd (GFI)

Gold Fields reported headline earnings per share (HEPS) of US$2.08 for H1 2026, marking an 81% increase year-over-year. This strong performance beat Wall Street’s consensus expectations of around US$1.97 to US$2.01 per share, driven by an 18% surge in gold sales volumes and higher realized bullion prices. Following the earnings beat, the company doubled its interim dividend to 1,625 SA cents per share and expanded its capital return framework by $500 million. The stock is currently trading up approximately 2.2%.

Afrimat Ltd (AFT)

Afrimat released a trading update warning that it faces some of the toughest operating conditions in its 20-year history for H1 2027. A stronger Rand, lower global iron ore prices, high shipping rates, and a tough local construction market are pulling down early-year earnings. However, management expects performance to recover in the second half as new manganese export allocations and synergies from its Lafarge acquisition take effect. While the stock traded slightly higher at market open, it dropped 5% later in the session as broader market pressure took hold
