Meanwhile, global crude prices continued to retreat after Iran and Oman agreed to establish a temporary, seven-mile-wide joint shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, along with a joint initiative to clear the strategic waterway of naval mines. Further easing supply concerns, the CEO of TotalEnergies noted that crude is currently “flowing quietly” out of the Strait. Gold also faced light downward pressure, drifting lower ahead of the crucial U.S. Core PCE Price Index release scheduled for 14:30 today. Investors remain on edge ahead of the closing bell, with high-stakes, marquee tech earnings due after the market close—highlighted by heavyweights Nvidia, Salesforce, and CrowdStrike.

US stocks had a modest session on Friday. Indices closed slightly lower, led by a 0.55% drop in the NASDAQ and a 0.16% decline in the S&P 500. Oil started to pull back following reports that around 16 million barrels passed through the Strait of Hormuz via the southern channel on Friday night. Traders now await new U.S. sanctions on Iran set to be announced today by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Tencent (700.HK)

Tencent fell 3.72% today (closing at HK$440.00, down from HK$457.00), continuing its post-earnings pullback following its Q2 2026 earnings release. U.S. markets extended their decline yesterday, driven primarily by sharp losses across technology and semiconductor stocks. The selloff was triggered by elevated crude oil prices amid ongoing Middle East tensions, alongside 30-year U.S. Treasury yields surging to 19-year highs. These macro headwinds reignited fears over rising corporate borrowing costs, sparking a broad valuation reset across high-growth AI and chip names. Elsewhere in the U.S. market, precious metals continued to pull back from recent highs, while Baidu shares plunged after a disappointed earnings report.

KOSPI

In Asian markets, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) tumbled nearly 6% as global macroeconomic pressures and surging bond yields prompted heavy liquidations in technology equities. Steep declines in major heavyweight constituents dragged the entire benchmark lower, led by severe drops in SK Hynix (-9.75%), Samsung Electronics (-7.82%), and SK Square (-11.54%), mirroring the weakness observed in Wall Street tech names.

Bidu Inc (BIDU)

Baidu Inc. reported its Q2 2026 financial results yesterday, missing consensus expectations on both top and bottom lines. The stock subsequently plummeted 12.73% to close at $90.87. Against Wall Street expectations of RMB 9.84 per ADS on revenue of RMB 31.95 billion, Baidu delivered earnings per ADS of RMB 7.22 on revenue of RMB 31.33 billion.

All eyes are on Exxaro Resources ahead of its earnings release tomorrow. The counter fell 3.02% after issuing its H1 2026 trading statement five days ago, which warned that HEPS and AEPS are projected to drop between 18% and 23% to 1,327c–1,414c per share (down from 1,724c in H1 2025). While initial selling pressure dragged the price down to a low of R175.04, it has managed a modest bounce off those levels.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

US stocks fell yesterday, with the S&P 500 down 0.78% and the NASDAQ losing 1.34% — Microsoft and Meta Platforms were the primary drag, with each falling around 3%. Oil futures surged nearly 4% on investor pessimism surrounding the U.S.–Iran conflict, following President Donald Trump’s comments that he is not interested in extending the expiring ceasefire agreement. This gave an overall boost to energy equities, and as such, we expect local energy stocks to trade well today. Elsewhere in commodities, precious metals were down slightly over 1%. On the earnings front, we saw results out from BHP and Absa Group this morning, while local market sentiment continues to ride the high from Thungela Resources’ strong numbers on Monday morning.

BHP

BHP announced earnings today and beat estimates across the board, declaring a final dividend of $0.99 per share. This marks its highest total share return in 4 years. Subsequently, the stock jumped 2.65% to close at A$63.85 on the ASX.

No particular company-specific news hit retail stocks, but we saw a sharp sell-off across the sector, with Mr Price Group Ltd (MRP), The Foschini Group Ltd (TFG), and Pepkor Holdings Ltd (PPH) dropping 4.52%, 4.61%, and 1.13% respectively.

As of this morning, the stock has surged over 5.5%, breaking past its previous high of R109.74. If it manages to close above this resistance, it could maintain its upward momentum, with the next target level to watch at R117.28.

Absa Group (ABG)

Absa Group announced its H1 2026 earnings today. While results were essentially in line with consensus and delivered high profitability, the market was unimpressed. The stock opened slightly higher this morning before slipping roughly 1.5%.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

This weekend saw no significant news while the 60-day U.S. – Iran ceasefire and negotiation deadline under the June Memorandum of Understanding is set to expire today. In equity markets, the S&P 500 closed virtually flat on Friday while holding firm above key daily support at 7,800, leaving the 7,840 record high as a critical resistance level to watch for the week ahead. Individual equity highlights included Tencent posting its first green session following last week’s earnings release, alongside a massive beat on earnings and operational estimates from Thungela Resources, while setup dynamics in Roblox signal a potential tactical opportunity for traders. Meanwhile, precious metals enjoyed a solid session into the weekend, with copper leading the complex after advancing 1.94% on renewed industrial demand expectations.

Roblox (RBLX)

Since dropping after earnings on July 30th, the stock has been holding steady in a price range between $33.88 and $40.00, matching its lowest levels from July 2024. This steady trading shows buyers are stepping in to support the share price despite initial market disappointment, with $40.00 acting as the key level to watch. A clear move above $40.00 could spark a stronger recovery toward filling the price gap left by the post-earnings drop, offering a favorable upside opportunity relative to the risk.

Tencent (700)

Tencent had its first green day today after its earnings announcement last Wednesday. The fact that the stock managed to bounce is a positive signal, as it avoided potentially creating new lows since the 24th of July. If it continues to push higher, we could see it fill the gap and resume the upward trend it has maintained over the past couple of months—a setup that also bodes well for Naspers Ltd (NPN) and Prosus N.V. (PRX).

Thungela Resources Ltd (TGA)

Thungela released its earnings announcement this morning. While investors had expected a dividend of R5.95 per share, the declared dividend per share came in at R5.50 with no special dividend. However, the market largely looked past the dividend miss, with the share price surging 13% since the market open as the company comfortably beat all other operational estimates and signaled a stronger operational outlook for the second half of the year.

SPAR Group Ltd (SPP)

SPP saw a 5.77% drop after the unexpected dual resignation of its top board leadership: This included the Independent Non-Executive Chairman and the Deputy Chair with immediate effect. Spar has seen a steady decline in its share price since early last year.
