The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday was an interesting day at the market, with several interesting earnings and equally interesting results and market reactions. It was also a clear profit-taking day in the American market, as it jumped up massively, reaching new all-time highs, before closing at the lows. A so-called ‘bearish pinball’. The commodities, meanwhile, continue to perform well, while U.S. tech struggles, though bounces in the near future are highly likely, if the recent patterns are anything to go by.

Tencent (700)

Tencent is down by quite a bit today, dropping almost all the way down to HK$ 480. As we’ve mentioned, Tencent has its earnings next week on Wednesday (12th August), which could result in further profit-taking before the earnings. But the earnings report itself is likely to be an upward catalyst for the company, which would have a huge impact on Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

JSE Top 40 Index (ALSI)

The Top 40 Index is currently the best way to gauge the local market trends. We see gold and PGM (Platinum Group Metals) miners making up around 20-25% of the ALSI. Banks, meanwhile, are seeing pressure, while telcos like Telkom (TKG) and MTN Group (MTN) are being dragged over the coals. Overall, it looks like a profit-taking day in the ALSI, with miners as the main winners.

Local Stocks

Sappi (SAP)

Sappi came out with its earnings today, showing middling numbers, with expectations of better Q4 being the one saving grace. It will be worth keeping an eye on to see how the market reacts to it.

Blu Label (BLU)

Blu will have its earnings this month, and the trading statement will be most worth keeping an eye on.

Energy Fuels is an American mining and refining company, specialising in uranium production. The company has been diversifying into south critical industrial metals as of 2025.

Celsius is an American beverage company, known for its energy drinks. In the past, it has shown the ability to move quite a bit on/after earnings.

After-Market Earnings

The Trade Desk (TTD)

Trade Desk is an American tech company with a significant presence in the software space. While the company hasn’t been performing very well, its earnings statements should still be very interesting.

Ever since the start of the conflict in the Middle East, gold has been taking a dive, dropping from the highs of $5400, to just a hair above $4000. With the recent earnings performance of AngloGold (ANG) in mind, gold trade can appear to be in a complete freefall with no end in sight, making some wonder if it’s worth investing in any more. Today, we’ll attempt to shed some light on the topic.

Historic Gold Trade

Gold has historically had close ties to risk and inflation, with it functioning for over a century as a safe space in uncertain or high-inflation times. This relation has seemingly broken down recently, as treasury bonds, particularly U.S. bonds, have usurped gold’s position as an inflation hedge. We’ve repeatedly seen the market scramble to sell gold and equities to buy treasury bonds when the market expects a rise in inflation or interest rates, and vice versa, much to the dismay of many seasoned traders.

Gold’s Position Now

As gold’s relation to inflation expectations changes, so should a good trader’s handling of gold and gold-related stocks, such as gold mining companies. As the war in the Middle East continues to disrupt the global energy supply chain and create uncertainty, gold should only take up a portion of any one portfolio and be treated like an ‘end-of-war’ trade. With gold thriving better in more certain times, we believe it’s best to wait until you see one of two situations before investing in gold assets.

The first and more obvious is a proper and final end to the war, with ships passing undeterred through the Strait of Hormuz. The second would be a supply chain adaptation to the situation, much like what we saw with the war in Ukraine. New pipelines, trade routes and infrastructure could lead to a bypassing of the Strait, or increased oil production in other regions that could help compensate for the loss of Middle East oil, and allow the market to start recovering once again.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We open to another green day as markets rally on news of talks between Iran and Oman. The S&P 500 reached a new all-time high, showing a trend of the market taking in only the good news and ignoring the bad regarding the Middle East, regardless of how shaky or indecisive it is. The commodity market, meanwhile, is doing rather well, with gold, PGMs (Platinum Group Metals), and iron seeing green, and oil as the main loser, which should see miners of all stripes and colours push up South Africa today, at the cost of oil stocks like Sasol (SOL).

Gold

Gold has had a massive jump, bringing it very close to $4,200, which we view as a crucial level for the metal. This translates directly to the likelihood that gold miners like AngloGold Ashanti (ANG) and Goldfields (GFI) start in the green by a significant amount, while making any stock that opens in the red a good possible option in the early hours. With strength in the Rand and the rest of the metal space, we expect gold and other miners to push up the ALSI as a whole today, barring an unforeseeable curveball.

Local Stocks

PGMs (Platinum Group Metals)

With both platinum and palladium going up, we see the PGMs as a potentially good investment for the day. In regard to specific stocks, we see Valterra (VAL) and Sibanye-Stillwater (SSW) as particularly interesting. In Valterra’s case, the company had a successful deal of sorts in China yesterday, which made the stock take off. Sibanye’s more diversified mining makes it able to benefit from the price increase in both gold and the PGMs.

Naspers (NPN)

Naspers has been performing very well ahead of Tencent’s (700) earnings next week. With it reaching a new high, reaching R925-950 is a possibility, and buying its dips could be a good option for the time being.

MTN Group (MTN)

MTN had a massive drop on Friday and has gone sideways since. But with an upgrade by Avior to outperform, and a target price at R251 (19% increase), we see it as a potentially attractive option.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market opens with risk-on sentiment, with a stronger Rand, green across most of the commodity space, and weakness in oil. Interestingly, this is despite the unchanged status in the Strait of Hormuz, following a U.S. announcement regarding a peace deal, which was firmly denied by Iran. We also see strong interest in Hong Kong, with Tencent (700), Baidu (BIDU), and Alibaba (BABA) all having a good day, which, in Tencent’s case, should translate into a good day for Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

Coal

With much of the world’s oil supply unavailable due to the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, coal as an energy source is becoming increasingly viable once again. We saw Japan switch to coal last month as natural gas prices shot through the roof, and coal power plants are being eyed in the U.S. to power the emerging data centres. We see similar stories in Europe and Asia, making it increasingly likely for thermal coal to make a comeback the longer oil is off the menu.

Local Stocks

Telkom (TKG)

Telkom came out with its Q1 earnings today, with decent numbers to show. While the revenue was modest, the expansion and earnings were good, with improved profitability, dividend and cash flow to boot. With the two upgrades from last month taken into account, Telkom is placed firmly in our watchlist.

Diversified Miners

With copper going up today, diversified miners like Glencore (GLN) and AngloAmerican (AGL) should have a good day, with the latter standing to benefit additionally from the green start in platinum.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s market was a very eventful one, with earnings, data, and a massive bounce in the U.S., where the S&P 500 made a full comeback from Wednesday’s drops. Today we see a lot of greens in commodities and equities, though gold seems to be struggling again, as the dollar regains some of its lost ground. We also saw Amazon (AMZN) soar after its earnings, while software continued to perform well for a fourth day in a row, which should make for an overall interesting session today.

S&P 500 Index

The S&P 500’s drop on Wednesday was in part due to the FOMC and interest rate decisions by the Fed. But there was also the squeezing of a large A.I. hedge fund, first to the downside, and then back up, which will likely serve as a cautionary tale in the future, once more details come out. Subsequently, the index has made a comeback from the drops of Wednesday, and is currently in the green, so we hope you were able to catch that rally!

Tencent (700)

Tencent is interestingly able to stay in the green, despite the flows out of Hang Seng (China), following yesterday’s rally in U.S. tech. Hang Seng itself is currently flat, which is somewhat reassuring, and makes Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) the potential play today. As for Tencent itself, HK$480 remains the level of resistance to look out for, with the upcoming earnings on 12th August having great potential to serve as the catalyst to break that level. This could once again be used to play with Naspers and Prosus.

Local Stocks

Sasol (SOL)

With the dollar going up and oil coming down, it’s unlikely that Sasol will be able to break R200 today. With a real possibility that it drops down to R180, it might not be the worst opportunity to take some profit today.

AngloGold Ashanti (ANG)

The dual-listed gold miners performed rather well in the American market, with AngloGold doing the best out of the bunch, growing by around 2%. Its Q2 numbers are scheduled to come out around noon today. This could also be interesting if you’re holding shares in any of the other gold miners, as they tend to move in tandem.

Today has a few interesting earnings, mainly in the oil sector, while China’s manufacturing PMI is the biggest point of economic data to look into.

Chevron is one of the largest oil companies in the U.S., with a multinational operation in over 180 countries.

Exxon is the largest oil company in the U.S., as well as the world, with a large number of well-known brands and operations.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

The U.S. market had a huge drop yesterday, with the S&P 500 diving from around 7480 points to almost 7320, following escalatory rhetoric from President Trump. We also saw average to disappointing numbers from the many earnings reports that came out, which painted a bleak image for the overall market. The software sector remains the sole ray of sunlight in the market, as it managed to squeeze out a move to the upside. Going into the day, U.S. government bond yields are rising again, making them a safe option relative to the riskier equity market. We also recommend keeping a close watch on the Dollar Index (DXY), as it will play a decisive role in the commodity market’s direction today.

Software

Software had a mixed bag of earnings yesterday, with Meta (META) and Qualcomm (QCOM) performing poorly on their earnings. At the same time, Microsoft (MSFT) managed to beat all expectations and is likely to have been a main contributor to the sector’s good performance today. We also see other stocks, such as ServiceNow (NOW), Adobe (ADBE), and Workday (WDAY), continue to perform well and go well past previous highs. Meanwhile, Oracle (ORCL) is still lagging behind and merely going sideways, which makes us believe that it’s likely to fall again if the market continues to drop.

Boxer (BOX)

Boxer was upgraded by Absa to overweight, with a target price of R90, an increase of 17%. We saw a very similar action by Investec recently, which shows that there is interest in Boxer.

Glencore (GLN)

Glencore received a double upgrade today. One by Investec with a target price of R140, the other by Standard Bank, with a target of £6.6, a difference of 17% and 21% respectively. With a metal space somewhat in the green, a very diversified miner like Glencore should see benefits.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market is a somewhat greener place in commodities and a mixed bag in equities, compared to yesterday’s opening, with rotation being the name of the game. We see the U.S. market rotating into software and consumer staples, while Asia is rotating out of Korea and Japan, and into Hong Kong and China. The day is also loaded with heavy hitters on both the earnings and economic data fronts, which should, all in all, make for an interesting session.

Tencent (700)

Tencent has benefitted greatly from the current rotation into China and Hong Kong, going up by more than 4% since yesterday. The company has made a great rotation into the Chinese A.I. sector, and subsequently, we’re likely to see gains in the copper industry, as A.I. tech is heavily dependent on the commodity for data centre construction. So keep an eye out for diversified miners like Glencore (GLN), as well as the usuals, Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

Local Stocks

Valterra (VAL)

Valterra released its earnings earlier today, with numbers that outperformed expectations by a good margin. As such, we expect it to have a good day.

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

Naspers and Prosus are likely to see gains due to Tencent’s (700) gains. When taking Valterra’s (VAL) earnings into account, it wouldn’t surprise us if we saw a gold drop, as funds are directed towards Naspers and Prosus, as well as Valterra.

Kumba Iron Ore (KIO)

Kumba Iron Ore received its first target price from Standard Bank today, set at R320, which is an increase of 19% from yesterday’s closing price.

Today’s aftermarket is loaded with heavy-hitting earnings, as well as the Fed interest rate decision and FOMC statement, which will have a huge impact on the global market.

Microsoft (MSFT)

Microsoft is one of America’s largest software companies, and its earnings are likely to have an impact on the sector, which is currently on the receiving end of a rotation in the broader tech sector.

Meta Platforms (META)

Meta is another member of the so-called ‘Magnificent 7’. Like Microsoft (MSFT), it’s considered to be a software company, but Meta is more diversified, with significant activity in A.I., communications, and advertising markets.

Qualcomm (QCOM)

Qualcomm is a U.S. based tech company involved in the development of software, A.I., and hardware, including semiconductors.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We start the day in a sea of red as expectations of interest rate hikes by the Fed soar, with Citadel Securities, one of America’s top firms, expecting an increase of 25 basis points by the end of the week. Meanwhile, the situation in the Middle East fails to improve, as neither side commits to serious negotiations, making the oil market even more unpredictable.

Software

Yesterday we saw a rotation into the software sector, as it saw a 3% growth, while the semis and the market as a whole took a downturn. But we see a general upward trend in the sector, as it continues to make higher lows, with $96 as the main level to watch on the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV). Regarding individual stocks, ServiceNow (NOW) seems to have broken the flag yesterday, most likely due to the company’s good earnings figures coming through. SoFi (SOFI) is another interesting stock, which has been going sideways for some time now, and with earnings scheduled for tomorrow, it’s likely to move in one direction or the other.

Local Stocks

Boxer (BOX)

Boxer released a trading statement in the morning, with a mixed bag of results. While the company is suffering from a deflationary environment, it has shown decent volume growth and market share gain. The margins are also holding steady, and new stores are opening. As the stock is currently on a downward turn, we recommend keeping an eye out for when it consolidates. To that end, we see the previous consolidations at R70 and R74 as the levels to look out for.

Platinum Group Metals

Platinum group metals are currently at a low point, but with a possible resurgence of internal combustion automobile manufacturing on the horizon (following the end of the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine), and increasing industrial demand, metals like platinum, palladium and rhodium make for a good long-term investment.

UPS is one of the world’s largest international shipping and courier companies.

Coca Cola (KO)

Coca-Cola is the world’s largest brand of cold drink, and just like the previously mentioned PayPal (PYPL), its performance can be used to gauge the state of the consumer market.

Visa (V)

Visa is an American multinational card and payment processor, and the second largest in the world, behind Mastercard (MA).

Seagate Technology (STX)

Seagate is an American data storage company, manufacturing products like hard drives, flash drives and more.

Ford (F)

Ford is a famous American car manufacturer, mainly producing pick-up trucks, SUVs and sports cars.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We open the day to a market rally in commodities and equities, following the cancellation of planned strikes over the weekend. Oil is the main loser today as it dropped by 6%, while gold and PGMs (Platinum Group Metals) show signs of a short-term bounce, which, in conjunction with Tencent’s (700) performance, helps create a risk-on sentiment for this morning session. However, we still recommend caution, as the market rally is behind cancelled strikes, rumoured to be due to a munitions shortage, rather than substantial progress towards peace. At the same time, Hormuz remains closed and further escalations are still on the table.

Gold

Our belief remains that gold needs to break $4200 to see proper movement to the upside. But looking at the charts, we believe that a short-term bounce is a very real possibility, which makes gold and gold miners an investment opportunity to keep an eye on, for those interested. As far as miners go, Harmony (HAR) had a standout performance last week, with significant pumps on Wednesday and Friday that were somewhat unexpected. We speculate that if it’s able to break the R280 level, we could see a retest of R290-300.

The PGMs are expected to move up this morning, supported by weakness in the dollar and strength in commodities. We see Valterra as the most attractive option, with R1160 as the level to break before retesting R1200.

Aspen (NPN)

Aspen received the go-ahead on the development and production of a potentially world’s first oral anti-HIV pill. But with last week’s reports of supply chain issues, and Friday’s downgrade, we see the stock as something to keep an eye on until it finds support.

Real Estate

Standard Bank came out with a trio of changes in the real estate sector today. Redefine Properties (RDF) was raised to buy, while NEPI Rockcastle (NRP) and SA Corporate Real Estate (SAC) were cut to hold.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market opens on the downside, as we see red nearly everywhere. The U.S. tech sector saw the inverse correlation between the semis and software sectors change for a day, as both dropped. At the same time, a weaker Rand and weakness in the metals space are expected to put significant pressure on our mining- and export-driven economy. As such, we expect a quiet session today as a prelude to a more eventful week for the local market, as many of the major local stocks are scheduled to release production figures and earnings, starting next Monday (27th July).

Software

Between semis and softwares, it was the latter that saw the more significant drop yesterday. While ServiceNow’s (NOW) earnings on Wednesday saw it beat expectations by a slight margin, it seems not to have been enough to make a change for the sector, or the stock. We believe that if ServiceNow breaches the $88 level, it could go further down, into the low 80s, before finding support. Another notable underperformer is Oracle (ORCL), which just seems to be unable to make a turnaround, despite receiving a 10-year software contract from the Pentagon yesterday. It’s currently at 2024 levels, and the selling seems not to be done just yet.

Local Stocks

Aspen Pharmacare (APN)

Aspen was downgraded to sell by the Standard Bank. While the target price has barely changed, with a marginal 2% change in the green, it could cause the stock to see a drop today.

Discovery (DSY)

Discovery stands out for its performance yesterday, as it was about to go up, even touching R260 at one point, before closing the session at R255. It’s the strongest of the local options at the moment.

Sanlam (SLM)

Sanlam had another bad day yesterday, closing the day at R84. This could ironically be a blessing in disguise, as R84 has been a buying interest level, and as such, it could have a bit of a bounce.
