US stocks had a modest session on Friday. Indices closed slightly lower, led by a 0.55% drop in the NASDAQ and a 0.16% decline in the S&P 500. Positive corporate earnings—highlighted by strong results from retailers like Ross Stores—and upbeat business activity data provided market support. However, ongoing bond market volatility tempered gains as Treasury yields resumed their rise despite government buyback announcements. Meanwhile, gold continued to climb. Oil started to pull back following reports that around 16 million barrels passed through the Strait of Hormuz via the southern channel on Friday night. Traders now await new U.S. sanctions on Iran set to be announced today by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Tencent (700.HK)

Tencent fell 3.72% today (closing at HK$440.00, down from HK$457.00), continuing its post-earnings pullback following its Q2 2026 earnings release. The stock dropped primarily due to market concerns over its record RMB 52.8 billion quarterly AI capital expenditure, which pushed free cash flow into negative territory. This prompted major brokers to lower their target multiples and price targets on the stock. Both Naspers and Prosus opened slightly lower this morning.

Datatec Ltd (DTC)

Datatec issued a major SENS announcement declaring a Special Cash Dividend of R29.00 per share, alongside a Scrip Distribution Alternative. Shareholders can elect to receive new, fully paid ordinary Datatec shares instead of the cash payout—a distribution representing over a third of the stock’s market value prior to the news. Datatec surged as high as R91.00 per share before moderating, leaving the stock up just over 7.5%.

MTN Group Ltd (MTN)

MTN announced its interim earnings today, delivering an operational beat led by a 21.3% surge in adjusted HEPS to 793c and strong core cash generation, though non-cash Irancell impairments dragged reported HEPS down 5.8%. The market reacted positively to the operational strength and the immediate launch of a R6 billion share buyback, sending the stock up as high as R203.81 intraday before settling around 1.0% higher.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

This weekend saw no significant news while the 60-day U.S. – Iran ceasefire and negotiation deadline under the June Memorandum of Understanding is set to expire today. In equity markets, the S&P 500 closed virtually flat on Friday while holding firm above key daily support at 7,800, leaving the 7,840 record high as a critical resistance level to watch for the week ahead. Individual equity highlights included Tencent posting its first green session following last week’s earnings release, alongside a massive beat on earnings and operational estimates from Thungela Resources, while setup dynamics in Roblox signal a potential tactical opportunity for traders. Meanwhile, precious metals enjoyed a solid session into the weekend, with copper leading the complex after advancing 1.94% on renewed industrial demand expectations.

Roblox (RBLX)

Since dropping after earnings on July 30th, the stock has been holding steady in a price range between $33.88 and $40.00, matching its lowest levels from July 2024. This steady trading shows buyers are stepping in to support the share price despite initial market disappointment, with $40.00 acting as the key level to watch. A clear move above $40.00 could spark a stronger recovery toward filling the price gap left by the post-earnings drop, offering a favorable upside opportunity relative to the risk.

Tencent (700)

Tencent had its first green day today after its earnings announcement last Wednesday. The fact that the stock managed to bounce is a positive signal, as it avoided potentially creating new lows since the 24th of July. If it continues to push higher, we could see it fill the gap and resume the upward trend it has maintained over the past couple of months—a setup that also bodes well for Naspers Ltd (NPN) and Prosus N.V. (PRX).

Thungela Resources Ltd (TGA)

Thungela released its earnings announcement this morning. While investors had expected a dividend of R5.95 per share, the declared dividend per share came in at R5.50 with no special dividend. However, the market largely looked past the dividend miss, with the share price surging 13% since the market open as the company comfortably beat all other operational estimates and signaled a stronger operational outlook for the second half of the year.

SPAR Group Ltd (SPP)

SPP saw a 5.77% drop after the unexpected dual resignation of its top board leadership: This included the Independent Non-Executive Chairman and the Deputy Chair with immediate effect. Spar has seen a steady decline in its share price since early last year.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We open to a red and yellow market, as yesterday’s CPI figures contributed to a new round of strength in the Dollar Index (DXY), at the cost of commodities and equities. We see weakness across the board in the metal space, which has led to a very risk-off sentiment, particularly as the market waits for the U.S. announcement regarding copper. For now, we expect a low-volatility market until a major catalyst shows up. We also recommend keeping an eye on the dollar inflation rate and the U.S. PPI numbers scheduled to be released later today, as it’s most likely to be the day’s catalyst.

Tencent (700)

Tencent had dropped by quite a bit following yesterday’s earnings. It was able to beat most expectations by a slight margin, but the capex (capital expenditure) figures were quite high, leading to uncertainty amongst investors and the subsequent drop. If the stock manages to hold at around the previous lows of HK$432, it could potentially make a comeback in the near future; otherwise, a test of HK$420 will be in order.

As a direct result of Tencent’s situation, we see a rotation out of Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX), which at one point were down by over 7%. We see R800 and R790 as the levels to keep an eye on, where Naspers could potentially bounce, while for Prosus we’ve marked R710 and R700.

Local Stocks

The commodities have been in the driving seat of the market for the last few days. But with uncertainty in their immediate future, we recommend keeping an eye on the banks, as the likes of Standard Bank (SBG) and Absa (ABG) could become the play today.

Sibanye-Stillwater (SSW)

Sibanye was upgraded to buy Citibank, with a target of $13.50 (around R54.5), which is an increase of 21%.

DRDGOLD (DRD)

DRD released a decent trading statement today, which, in conjunction with the good performance of the last few days, could see it go further up. However, it’s worth taking into account that the company usually suffers from low trading volume, and its high capital expenditure and scale make it more sensitive than other gold miners to shifts in the price of gold. So trade carefully!

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday was another quiet day in the U.S., as the market continues to consolidate in the absence of a sufficient catalyst. Pakistan announced progress towards a deal, but the radio silence from all other parties and the old familiar pattern of deals and escalations have led to a very muted reaction from the market. With very little else in terms of news headlines, all eyes are fixed on the U.S. core CPI numbers coming out later today, as it can be a sufficiently potent catalyst to get the market moving in one direction or the other.

Tencent (700)

Tencent reports earnings today, which is disappointing, as its share price has continued to drop by over 2% overnight. However, it’s important to note that it has been forming higher lows since June, which suggests the stock could still bounce. As for the earnings themselves, Tencent has shown increasingly tighter margins between results and expectations, which has led to a muted market reaction. But if you see a larger gap between the results and expectations today, expect a similarly large movement in the ALSI, as a huge win could lead to investments out of banks and locals and into Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) and vice versa.

Local Stocks

With Shoprite (SHP), Northam Platinum (NPH), and Impala (IMP) all releasing trading statements today, we see PGMs (Platinum Group Metals) and retailers as the name of the game.

Shoprite (SHP)

Shoprite released an earnings statement today, with decent numbers that keep it at the top of the retail space. With it being near the top of its range, it’ll be interesting to see if the market sees this as an opportunity to take profits, or if the numbers are good enough to see the stock soar higher.

Northam Platinum (NPH)

Northam Platinum also released a trading statement with great numbers today. We recommend keeping an eye out to see how it trades in the morning, as there’s currently no consensus on it, and it could go either way.

Ex-Dividends & Economic Data

U.S. Core CPI numbers scheduled for 14:30 today are especially important to keep an eye on, for the possible effect on interest rates and its function as a catalyst for the broader market.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s market was uneventful, as the U.S. market continued to move sideways and consolidate. There has been very little news from the Middle East, which could potentially signal a move towards peace, but we prefer to wait for more concrete evidence. Interestingly, we see a mixed bag of movement in the commodity space, with gold and platinum giving up some gains, while remaining higher than Friday. Meanwhile, oil is up by more than 6%, due to no particular headline, which should translate to a good opening for Sasol (SOL) and the likes.

Tencent (700)

Tencent had a very red day today, dropping by around HK$10, which should have a negative impact on Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) openings today. However, we recommend keeping an eye on the stock, as its earnings tomorrow (Wednesday, 9th August) could be a major catalyst. For now, HK$480 is once again the important level to look out for.

Telkom (TKG)

Telkom received its third upgrade since last month today. This time raised to overweight by Morgan-Stanley, with a target price of R70, an increase of 22%. As such, we expect it to have a good opening.

Pepkor (PPH)

Pepkor has swing trade potential, with R22 being the mark to look out for, as we could see a quick rise to R23 if it breaks. It’s also expected to release a trading update soon, which could lead to further growth if the update looks good. As such, we see Pepkor as one of the best local stocks in the retail sector, together with Boxer (BOX) and Shoprite (SHP).

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday was an interesting day at the market, with several interesting earnings and equally interesting results and market reactions. It was also a clear profit-taking day in the American market, as it jumped up massively, reaching new all-time highs, before closing at the lows. A so-called ‘bearish pinball’. The commodities, meanwhile, continue to perform well, while U.S. tech struggles, though bounces in the near future are highly likely, if the recent patterns are anything to go by.

Tencent (700)

Tencent is down by quite a bit today, dropping almost all the way down to HK$ 480. As we’ve mentioned, Tencent has its earnings next week on Wednesday (12th August), which could result in further profit-taking before the earnings. But the earnings report itself is likely to be an upward catalyst for the company, which would have a huge impact on Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

JSE Top 40 Index (ALSI)

The Top 40 Index is currently the best way to gauge the local market trends. We see gold and PGM (Platinum Group Metals) miners making up around 20-25% of the ALSI. Banks, meanwhile, are seeing pressure, while telcos like Telkom (TKG) and MTN Group (MTN) are being dragged over the coals. Overall, it looks like a profit-taking day in the ALSI, with miners as the main winners.

Sappi (SAP)

Sappi came out with its earnings today, showing middling numbers, with expectations of better Q4 being the one saving grace. It will be worth keeping an eye on to see how the market reacts to it.

Blu Label (BLU)

Blu will have its earnings this month, and the trading statement will be most worth keeping an eye on.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market opens with risk-on sentiment, with a stronger Rand, green across most of the commodity space, and weakness in oil. Interestingly, this is despite the unchanged status in the Strait of Hormuz, following a U.S. announcement regarding a peace deal, which was firmly denied by Iran. We also see strong interest in Hong Kong, with Tencent (700), Baidu (BIDU), and Alibaba (BABA) all having a good day, which, in Tencent’s case, should translate into a good day for Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

Coal

With much of the world’s oil supply unavailable due to the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, coal as an energy source is becoming increasingly viable once again. We saw Japan switch to coal last month as natural gas prices shot through the roof, and coal power plants are being eyed in the U.S. to power the emerging data centres. We see similar stories in Europe and Asia, making it increasingly likely for thermal coal to make a comeback the longer oil is off the menu.

Telkom (TKG)

Telkom came out with its Q1 earnings today, with decent numbers to show. While the revenue was modest, the expansion and earnings were good, with improved profitability, dividend and cash flow to boot. With the two upgrades from last month taken into account, Telkom is placed firmly in our watchlist.

Diversified Miners

With copper going up today, diversified miners like Glencore (GLN) and AngloAmerican (AGL) should have a good day, with the latter standing to benefit additionally from the green start in platinum.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s market was a very eventful one, with earnings, data, and a massive bounce in the U.S., where the S&P 500 made a full comeback from Wednesday’s drops. Today we see a lot of greens in commodities and equities, though gold seems to be struggling again, as the dollar regains some of its lost ground. We also saw Amazon (AMZN) soar after its earnings, while software continued to perform well for a fourth day in a row, which should make for an overall interesting session today.

S&P 500 Index

The S&P 500’s drop on Wednesday was in part due to the FOMC and interest rate decisions by the Fed. But there was also the squeezing of a large A.I. hedge fund, first to the downside, and then back up, which will likely serve as a cautionary tale in the future, once more details come out. Subsequently, the index has made a comeback from the drops of Wednesday, and is currently in the green, so we hope you were able to catch that rally!

Tencent (700)

Tencent is interestingly able to stay in the green, despite the flows out of Hang Seng (China), following yesterday’s rally in U.S. tech. Hang Seng itself is currently flat, which is somewhat reassuring, and makes Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) the potential play today. As for Tencent itself, HK$480 remains the level of resistance to look out for, with the upcoming earnings on 12th August having great potential to serve as the catalyst to break that level. This could once again be used to play with Naspers and Prosus.

Local Stocks

Sasol (SOL)

With the dollar going up and oil coming down, it’s unlikely that Sasol will be able to break R200 today. With a real possibility that it drops down to R180, it might not be the worst opportunity to take some profit today.

AngloGold Ashanti (ANG)

The dual-listed gold miners performed rather well in the American market, with AngloGold doing the best out of the bunch, growing by around 2%. Its Q2 numbers are scheduled to come out around noon today. This could also be interesting if you’re holding shares in any of the other gold miners, as they tend to move in tandem.

Today has a few interesting earnings, mainly in the oil sector, while China’s manufacturing PMI is the biggest point of economic data to look into.

Exxon is the largest oil company in the U.S., as well as the world, with a large number of well-known brands and operations.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market is a somewhat greener place in commodities and a mixed bag in equities, compared to yesterday’s opening, with rotation being the name of the game. We see the U.S. market rotating into software and consumer staples, while Asia is rotating out of Korea and Japan, and into Hong Kong and China. The day is also loaded with heavy hitters on both the earnings and economic data fronts, which should, all in all, make for an interesting session.

Tencent (700)

Tencent has benefitted greatly from the current rotation into China and Hong Kong, going up by more than 4% since yesterday. The company has made a great rotation into the Chinese A.I. sector, and subsequently, we’re likely to see gains in the copper industry, as A.I. tech is heavily dependent on the commodity for data centre construction. Local Stocks

Valterra (VAL)

Valterra released its earnings earlier today, with numbers that outperformed expectations by a good margin. As such, we expect it to have a good day.

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

Naspers and Prosus are likely to see gains due to Tencent’s (700) gains. When taking Valterra’s (VAL) earnings into account, it wouldn’t surprise us if we saw a gold drop, as funds are directed towards Naspers and Prosus, as well as Valterra.

Kumba Iron Ore (KIO)

Kumba Iron Ore received its first target price from Standard Bank today, set at R320, which is an increase of 19% from yesterday’s closing price.

Today’s aftermarket is loaded with heavy-hitting earnings, as well as the Fed interest rate decision and FOMC statement, which will have a huge impact on the global market.

SoFi is a U.S. fintech and money lender, with activities ranging from student loans to insurance and credit cards.

After-Market Earnings

Microsoft (MSFT)

Microsoft is one of America’s largest software companies, and its earnings are likely to have an impact on the sector, which is currently on the receiving end of a rotation in the broader tech sector.

Meta Platforms (META)

Meta is another member of the so-called ‘Magnificent 7’. Like Microsoft (MSFT), it’s considered to be a software company, but Meta is more diversified, with significant activity in A.I., communications, and advertising markets.

Qualcomm (QCOM)

Qualcomm is a U.S. based tech company involved in the development of software, A.I., and hardware, including semiconductors.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today we see what could be the beginnings of a turnaround for gold, as it gives back some of yesterday’s gains, while the platinum groups open flat or in the red. The flat and down openings are also a theme in the broader market, both in the West and on our side of the world. Interestingly, Asia seems to be doing well, with Nikkei 225 (Japan), KOSPI (Korea) and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) all in the green today. With commodities dropping and retailers taking hits in broad market sell-offs, we recommend keeping a close eye on the interest rate decision scheduled at 15:00 today, as it could determine where our market goes from here.

Software

Softwares took a hit yesterday, following ServiceNow’s (NOW) earnings. It’s worth keeping an eye on the sector in the near future, with the upcoming earnings from Microsoft (MSFT) next Wednesday (29th July), which could act as a short-term catalyst and bring a rotation out of semis and into softwares.

Tencent (700)

Tencent sees a bit of green today, even touching 2% growth at one point, before dropping back down to 1%. This could be the cause for some optimism, as we could see it retest the HK$460 and the subsequent HK$480 again. We believe that any further upside would require a proper catalyst, and the most likely candidate is the upcoming earnings on Wednesday, 12th August.

Local Stocks

Blue Label (BLU)

Blue is on our watchlist, as it has managed something of a comeback, finding new lows before breaking swing highs. We see R8.80 as the next level, which could see the stock test R9.0-9.25 again.

South32 (S32)

South32 sees another round of massive growth for a fifth day in a row, though interestingly, it didn’t leave a gap this time. There could be a shorting opportunity if it reaches R55-56, as a drop could see the stock close some or all of the gaps between R45 and R51.

AngloAmerican (AGL)

AngloAmerican released its production numbers earlier, displaying decent numbers overall. But most interestingly, it reported a significant cost cut in copper production, which should help push the company up.

Earnings & Economic Data

The interest rate decision at 15:00 is probably the most interesting item today, as it’s the most impactful and somewhat unpredictable. Yesterday’s CPI figures were quite hot, while the officials have had a rather hawkish tone as of late, which makes it all the harder to predict whether the interest rate goes up or down. Either way, the consumers and retailers will be the first to feel the effects.

After-Market Earnings

Intel (INTC)

Intel is the third-largest microchip designer and manufacturer, whose earnings have previously displayed the ability to move the semiconductor sector.

Newmont (NEM)

Newmont is a major American gold miner. With the price of gold falling, its earnings -particularly its forward-looking statements- should be worth keeping an eye on if you have any interest in gold.
