The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s market was a very eventful one, with earnings, data, and a massive bounce in the U.S., where the S&P 500 made a full comeback from Wednesday’s drops. Today we see a lot of greens in commodities and equities, though gold seems to be struggling again, as the dollar regains some of its lost ground. We also saw Amazon (AMZN) soar after its earnings, while software continued to perform well for a fourth day in a row, which should make for an overall interesting session today.

S&P 500 Index

The S&P 500’s drop on Wednesday was in part due to the FOMC and interest rate decisions by the Fed. But there was also the squeezing of a large A.I. hedge fund, first to the downside, and then back up, which will likely serve as a cautionary tale in the future, once more details come out. Subsequently, the index has made a comeback from the drops of Wednesday, and is currently in the green, so we hope you were able to catch that rally!

Tencent (700)

Tencent is interestingly able to stay in the green, despite the flows out of Hang Seng (China), following yesterday’s rally in U.S. tech. Hang Seng itself is currently flat, which is somewhat reassuring, and makes Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) the potential play today. As for Tencent itself, HK$480 remains the level of resistance to look out for, with the upcoming earnings on 12th August having great potential to serve as the catalyst to break that level. This could once again be used to play with Naspers and Prosus.

Local Stocks

Sasol (SOL)

With the dollar going up and oil coming down, it’s unlikely that Sasol will be able to break R200 today. With a real possibility that it drops down to R180, it might not be the worst opportunity to take some profit today.

AngloGold Ashanti (ANG)

The dual-listed gold miners performed rather well in the American market, with AngloGold doing the best out of the bunch, growing by around 2%. Its Q2 numbers are scheduled to come out around noon today. This could also be interesting if you’re holding shares in any of the other gold miners, as they tend to move in tandem.

Earnings & Economic Data

Today has a few interesting earnings, mainly in the oil sector, while China’s manufacturing PMI is the biggest point of economic data to look into.

Pre-Market Earnings

Moderna (MRNA)

Moderna is an American pharmaceutical company, specialising in the treatment of RNA viruses with mRNA vaccines.

Chevron (CVX)

Chevron is one of the largest oil companies in the U.S., with a multinational operation in over 180 countries.

Exxonmobil (XOM)

Exxon is the largest oil company in the U.S., as well as the world, with a large number of well-known brands and operations.

USD/ZAR

We currently hold a large cash reserve at Herenya, and the dollar is our preferred currency over the Rand. This is due to a number of reasons, including the hawkish tone of Kevin Warsh during the FOMC report last week and the declared intention to keep inflation under control. This has led to pressure on the gold price and other commodities, and by extension, has led to gold’s loss of ability to function as an inflation hedge (at least in the short to medium term).

We’re also seeing a continued reduction in oil prices, which has been a driving factor behind the inflation, as the oil price that started the year at approximately $62 reached a peak of around $120. The 3-month period (from March to June), where oil prices ranged between $100 to $120, was a period of supply chain disruption and cost accumulation that was felt across the board and contributed to the rising inflation, which will continue to be felt for months, even if oil drops down to the $60 mark.

With these factors in mind, we expect the dollar to take off from the lows of 2025, which doesn’t bode well, particularly for the commodity sector, and while the Rand has shown surprising resilience, we simply don’t expect it to be able to keep up with the dollar, and speculate that it will drop to 1:18 exchange ratio.

S&P 500 Index

We’ve also speculated for some time that the S&P 500 is going to come down, and the stronger U.S. Dollar, along with SpaceX’s (SPCX) entrance to the scene, could be the catalyst for that.

Another set of observable factors is the wide gap between the 200-day average and the index’s current position, as well as the decreasing momentum to the upside, which leads us to conclude that the S&P 500 is likely going to drop. There are several signs that can be used to identify a starting point, such as a close below the 50-day moving average.

As for the drop itself, we believe we prefer the safer approach of keeping our money and buying stocks once the market has found a bottom. But to the bolder trader who would rather use the opportunity to short, we recommend deliberate risk management, with careful stop loss level placement, and position sizing.

Reinet (RNI)

It’s fair to say that we are in a similarly defensive posture as Reinet, with 60% our local portfolio and 35-40% offshore being in cash. While this has resulted in a large drop in Reinet share value, we believe that it’s a sign of a patient and disciplined approach, as the company has used the opportunity to buy back some of its shares and regain some control, whilst maintaining enough cash to invest when a valuable opportunity comes. While this approach doesn’t produce quick results, it reduces our volatility when the market comes down, and it gives us a greater ability to buy stocks when the time is right.

Equity Ideas

Locals

We believe that local retailers like Pick N Pay (PIK) and Clicks (CLS) have growth potential. While we view Clicks as an undervalued stock under pressure, we see value in Pick N Pay due to its potential as a take-out target or an unbundling of Boxer (BOX). We also see value in diversified industrials like Bid Corp (BID), as well as the likes of Aspen (APN) and Sibanye Stillwater (SSW), which are some of our biggest holdings.

Offshore

We see cannabis as a great investment theme offshore, as the drug’s reclassification should make trade and banking significantly easier, and promote corporate activities such as mergers and acquisitions, which makes it a more attractive long-term investment.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market opens in the red, with declines across most of the board and significant moves in the American tech sector. Gold seems to be the only outlier in the commodities sector, seeing minor growth, while oil just barely holds steady. Tencent has dropped by another 2.2%, which makes it all the more interesting to see if it’s able to go sideways and maintain some of its gains from Tuesday’s bounce, or if those gains were simply a speed bump on the downward road.

S&P 500 Index

The U.S. market saw some action to the downside yesterday, reaching the lower weekly expectation, where it found support. This is in large part due to the SpaceX IPO (Initial Public Offering), scheduled for next Friday (12th June), with a target market evaluation of $1.7 trillion. As for specific stocks, we’d like to point to Micron Technologies (MU), as it has held up incredibly well, while making new all-time highs.

Softwares

The software sector came down by approximately 4.3%, and we speculate further drops. This is almost expected after the growth the sector has seen since April, and we suspect the lower $90 range on the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) to be the level to keep an eye on.

Local Stocks

Anglo American plc (AGL)

Anglos saw a dip yesterday, dropping to just shy of R90. We think this is a good time to get out with any shorts you may be holding, as last time the company had a push up, it had two or three days of downwards movement before it regained its losses. The same logic could apply to other dual-listed miners, such as Glencore (GLN) and BHP (BHG).

Investec (INP) & Mondi (MNP)

Mondi’s replacement by Investec in the FTSE100 has been confirmed and is scheduled for two weeks, on Friday, 19th June. This is likely to pull investments out of Mondi and into Investec until the scheduled date.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market is expected to open in the red, as perplexing news from the U.S.-China negotiations, in conjunction with rising oil prices, has inclined the market towards selling. It also doesn’t help that U.S. and European bond yields have increased, leading to concerns that inflation will continue to accumulate and contribute to market weakness. We believe that the morning play is to try to short something that opens flat.

S&P 500 Index

The American market sees more sales following concerns of inflation and uncertain news from the U.S.-China negotiations. A noteworthy event was China’s order of 200 jets from Boeing (BA), which was less than half of the expected 500. This has led to a 4% drop in Boeing shares. It’s worth noting that while the market is currently down, it’s likely to go back up again. We’ve seen a consistent pattern of dips being bought, with no reason to think that things will go differently this time.

Copper & Iron

Copper and iron have both seen significant drops of about 3.7% and 1.% respectively. While copper is still relatively strong, mining companies will feel the pressure, and it’s highly likely that we will see a correction in their share values. This can be an opportunity if you’re interested in this part of the metal space.

Local Stocks

British American Tobacco (BTI)

British American Tobacco has seen significant upward movement, pushing up to R1100. range in the U.S. This could be a good safety hedge, as it’s likely to trade relatively well in the morning.

Pick N Pay (PIK)

Pick’n Pay saw a massive jump yesterday, following headlines describing it as undervalued. We believe that the company’s upcoming earnings on Monday, 25th May, could be a catalyst for further movement.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call. We open to a red metal market as oil prices increase by around 3.8%. This is following news of strikes and retaliatory strikes between the U.S. and Iran, which is noteworthy for causing very little movement in the Volatility Index (VIX). Copper, in the meantime, had a standout performance, as it grew by 0.9%, which we speculate is due to demand in data centre construction.

S&P 500 Index

The American market’s reaction to the news from the Middle East wasbeen muted to say the least, with the Volatility Index being unable to even reach the daily highs. This could be interpreted as the market pricing in the good news, as the possibility of a deal being reached isn’t entirely out of the question. For now, we recommend keeping an eye on the S&P 500, with 7,350. and 7,330. points as the lower daily levels to look out for, and 7,410. for the upper level.

Semiconductors

The semiconductor sector had a drop in stock value yesterday, as many of the prominent companies in the sector fell into the red. NVIDIA (NVDA) is a notable exception, as the company’s shares have risen by more than 7.5% from its weekly low on Tuesday, most likely as a result of a rotation play by fund managers. While the drop is not definitive, we think this could be a good time to invest in hedging options if you have a lot of longs in the sector, as a catalyst could cause a more significant downward movement in the sector.

Today, we looked at 13 charts; below are only a few. Join us in the morning call on Discord to see it all. Let’s have a look at the overnight moves. We open to a sea of green, with oil as the main loser in the market. This follows a de-escalating gesture by President Trump, in which he announced a pause in “Project Freedom,” an operation in which the U.S. Navy would attempt to guide civilian ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Time will tell if this will contribute to achieving peace, but for now, it seems there is more room for risk today, with the candidates being anything that opens positive (Oil-related stocks being the exception).

S&P 500 Index

The U.S. market has reached another all-time high, but the trend of semiconductor manufacturing driving the market up remains in place. This has resulted in a gap of around 13% between the average stock in the S&P 500 and the respective highs, which is the widest the gap has been in 25 years. This contributes further to the image of an overstretched market, as according to InvestSnips, only 16 semiconductor companies are in the S&P 500.

TENCENT (700)

Tencent has seen another drop of around 2%, which is slightly puzzling, as other major companies from China seem to be on the rise. The company has its earnings coming up on May 13th (Wednesday next week), which makes for a good opportunity to play with Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) stocks. But if you’re interested in investing in a Chinese tech company, we recommend taking a look at Baidu (BIDU) for now, as the company has seen a 6% jump, and appears to have room for further growth.

Today has a few noteworthy earnings, mainly in the tech and consumer sectors. Listed below are a few, starting with the earnings scheduled for the pre-market.

Novo Nordisk (NVO)

Novo Nordisk is a pharmaceutical multinational based in Denmark, with earnings scheduled for pre-market today.

The Walt Disney Company (DIS)

Disney is a famous American entertainment company based in California. Their earnings are scheduled for the pre-market today.

Uber Technologies (UBER)

Uber is an American transportation and courier service provider, active in 71 countries. Uber’s earnings are scheduled for the pre-market today.

Arm Holdings (ARM)

Arm is a British software and semiconductor manufacturer, with earnings scheduled for the after-hours today.

AppLovin (APP)

AppLovin is an American tech company, specialising in the development, marketing and sale of mobile apps and games. Their earnings are scheduled for the after-market.

Snap Inc (SNAP)

Snap is an American tech company known for developing apps like Snapchat and Bitmoji. They have earnings scheduled for today’s after-market.

Today, we looked at 13 charts; below are only a few. Join us in the morning call on Discord to see it all. Let’s have a look at the overnight moves. We saw a variety of results and consequences from yesterday’s earnings, with companies like Meta (META) dropping by over 7% in after-hours trading. Meanwhile others like Amazon (AMZN) and Qualcomm (QCOM) saw dramatic gains. Regarding commodities, we see Gold, Silver, and Platinum in the green. Oil in the meantime has grown by another 4.3%, nearly reaching $110, which, in conjunction with a weaker Rand, will put pressure on the consumer market.

For now, we’d like to remind you that both the U.S. and U.K. markets will remain open on Workers’ Day tomorrow. Meanwhile, China, the U.K. and Japan are closed on Monday (May 4th) due to local holidays.

S&P 500 Index

The index continues to trade near all-time highs, with very little upward or downward movement. But a look at the broader picture could cause concern, as the continuously rising oil price could have a large impact on the inflation rates, and by extension, the consumer markets. With that in mind, the graphs appear very top heavy, which makes it a difficult market to play with.

Tencent (700)

Tencent dropped by another 2.1% today, which puts pressure on Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX), despite their good performances. While currently around HK$460, Tencent risks dropping further to HK$440, or even the HK$420 range. It remains to be seen if the company can turn its fortune with the earnings call, scheduled for Wednesday, May 26th.

Earnings

While not as dramatic as yesterday, today still has some interesting earnings to keep an eye out for.

Caterpillar (CAT)

Caterpillar is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction and engineering equipment. Their earning’s scheduled for premarket today.

Lilly (LLY)

Lilly is one of the world’s oldest pharmaceutical companies, and producers of drugs such as Prozac and Humilin. The company’s earnings are scheduled for the pre-market today.

Mastercard (MA)

Mastercard’s earnings report could be particularly interesting, as similarly to VISA (V) and Coca Cola (KO), it can be used to gauge the state of the consumers and consumer markets. Like the earlier, Mastercard’s earnings are scheduled for the pre-market.

Apple (AAPL)

Apple is one of the more stable tech-giants, and recently the change of CEO did not have any dramatic impact on the company’s shares. The company earnings are scheduled for today after-hours.

SanDisk (SNDK)

SanDisk is a tech manufacturer with a focus on memory storage devices, such as hard drives. The company’s earnings are scheduled for after-hours.

Western Digital (WDC)

Western Digital is another tech company, with specialisation in hard-drives. Together with Sandisk, they can show the state of the memory storage manufacturing part of the tech-sector. Its earnings are scheduled for after-hours.

Today, we looked at 13 charts; below are only a few. Join us in the morning call on Discord to see it all. Let’s have a look at the overnight moves. The market continues to decline as uncertainty continues. Precious metals and in particular the PGMs (like Platinum and Palladium) took a hit, while oil is up by 2.6%. This has manifested as a 1.8% increase in Sasol (SOL), making it a prime target for profit-taking. However, the rest of the market is relatively subdued, with this week seeing one of the lowest weekly trading volumes in recent history. As a result, we predict a very quiet session today, as there aren’t any noteworthy earnings or economic data scheduled for release to play off of, and next Monday (April 27th) is a public holiday.

S&P 500 Index

The U.S. market continues to trade at swing-time-highs. Yesterday it saw a massive drop, prompted by news of Israeli airstrikes against Iran, which quickly turned out to be false. Subsequently, the market returned more or less to the same spot. This goes to show how sensitive the market currently is, despite ongoing negotiations, and negative news are likely to result in quick reactions from the market.

Software

The software sector has been trading poorly since yesterday, when ServiceNow (NOW) took a hit following its earnings. We intend to closely monitor the sector going into summer. But in the short term, all eyes remain on Microsoft (MSFT), which has notably suffered less than the rest of the sector, and has earnings scheduled on the 29th of April (Wednesday next week).

Intel (INTC)

Intel surprised the market with its earnings yesterday, beating the estimates by over 14 times. The company has been on the rise since August of last year, when it received an $8.9 USD investment from the U.S. government. It’s currently trading close to all-time highs, making it a somewhat difficult share to play with. But it’s worth keeping an eye on regardless, as Intel is a major micro-chip manufacturer, and it will have a ripple effect on the Semiconductor market, as well as the tech sector at large.

PHLX Semiconductor Sector (SOX)

Semiconductors have been on one of the longest streaks of up days, and we speculate that Intel’s (INTC) gains could lead to further growth in the Semiconductor market. We recommend keeping an eye on the PHLX Semiconductor Sector (SOX) index going into the day.

Today, we looked at 13 charts; below are only a few. Join us in the morning call on Discord to see it all. Let’s have a look at the overnight moves. Yesterday’s market was an uncertain one as talks between the U.S. and Iran continue, resulting in mixed and unclear signals. This has resulted in a very low volume of trade throughout the day, and the overnights seem to have followed suit. We expect today to be another wait-and-see day, with oil and food retailers as the main winners. For the time being, we recommend keeping an eye out for the Consumer Price Inflation report tomorrow morning at 10:00, as well as the annual Retail Sales figure at 13:00.

S&P 500 Index

Yesterday, the market continued to trade close to all-time highs, but the rate of growth has seemingly slowed to a crawl, making it quite risky and unpredictable. As a result, it might be a good idea to look into hedging options until tomorrow (Wednesday, 22nd of April), when the current ceasefire is scheduled to end. We would also like to once again remind you of the upcoming Tesla (TSLA), ServiceNow (NOW), and Boeing (BA) earnings, also scheduled for tomorrow.

Software

The software sector saw a minor rise yesterday, which we believe will continue, as the bottom was reached at around $74,5 on the 10th of April. We speculate that the $88 mark on the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) is the number to look out for, as once it’s reached, we could see further growth from the ETF. We have also listed a few software stocks to keep an eye on, below.

ServiceNow

ServiceNow (NOW) will have earnings tomorrow, as mentioned previously.

Adobe (ADBE)

Adobe (ADBE) had a weak day yesterday, but announced a partnership with Nvidia (NVDA), OpenAI and others, which makes it worth keeping an eye on.

BlackBerry (BB)

Blackberry (BB) had a strong day yesterday and reached a 52-week high. We’re keeping an eye on it, as it might see a short squeeze in the near future.

Today, we looked at 13 charts; below are only a few. Join us in the morning call on Discord to see it all. Let’s have a look at the overnight moves. Today we open to a weaker Rand, and a red market in general, as the Strait of Hormuz was closed over the weekend. As a result, oil has seen a massive jump of over 11%, while the rest of the market is starting to recover as usual, though we doubt the growth will be as dramatic as what we saw on Friday.

Looking at the chart below, Tencent (700) may appear as an anomaly, but it’s important to note that the Asian session had already closed by the time we heard the bad news. As a result, we expect it to catch up today, and subsequently for Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) to open flat today, while Thungela (TGA), Sasol (SOL), and Exxaro (EXX) go up.

S&P 500 Index

Today will most likely be a difficult trading day for the S&P 500, as it was at an all time high last Friday, but following the weekend’s news, it dropped down to 7,100. range. We expect it to remain in the same zone in the short-term future, barring dramatic headlines that push it up again. It’s important to note that the index is currently growing, but it’s not a universal feature at all, with most of the growth concentrated in a select few of the stocks. As for companies that you might want to keep an eye on, we suggest Tesla (TSLA) Servicenow (NOW) and Boeing (BA), as they are scheduled to have their earnings on Wednesday, the 22nd.

South African Trades

We expect most of the stocks in the U.S. market to be down today, so we’ve researched and compiled a list of South African stocks with swingtrade potential to keep an eye on.

Woolworths (WHL)

Woolworths has a clear range between R50 and R51. It had a great day on Friday, which brought it to shy of R52. We speculate that it will go down to 50 Rand in the near future.

Boxer (BOX)

Boxer Retail’s range seems to be between R73 and R74, and we recommend keeping an eye out in case if it drops down to the R70 range during the week.

Blu (BLU)

Blu appears to have found a bottom at R8.50 after its dividends and has been slowly growing since. We believe that it has growth potential with the right kind of headlines.

Aspen Pharmacare (APN)

Aspen had a surprisingly weak day on friday, but it maintains a relatively high value today. It remains to be seen whether it will go up or down, but we speculate that if it hits the R124 range, it’s likely to continue dropping.

Bid Corporation (BID)

Bid Corp shares are likely to grow during the week, as they benefit from the increased food prices, as well as today’s weaker rand.
