The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday, the U.S. market reached another all-time high, off the back of the PPI figures, with the S&P 500 breaching the level at 7800 points. With no news or catalyst to push in either direction, we expect a quiet session, where the U.S. ends the week on similar levels. Meanwhile, we see yields on the 30-year U.S. Treasury bonds reach their highest point since 2001. Over on our side of the world, we see pressure on the mining sector, as gold, platinum, palladium, and copper drop. But while PGMs (Platinum Group Metals) could have reached a support level, diversified miners BHP Group (GHP) and South32 (S32) are unlikely to be out of the woods yet.

Software

The software sector grew by 3.2%, with Workday in particular taking off after reports of a buyout by the private equity firm, Silver Lake. This has led to growth elsewhere in the sector as well, with the likes of ServiceNow (NOW) and Adobe (ADBE) seeing similar growth as well. ServiceNow in particular saw elevated volumes, and we recommend keeping an eye on it, as it could see further growth, were it to breach the $130 level.

Gold

Yesterday was a rough day for gold, as the trend of higher lows was broken. With no positive or negative headlines, it’s possible that we see further drops if the lows of the Asian session, at around $4315, are reached. As such, we also see a drop across the board for gold miners like AngloGold Ashanti (ANG) or Harmony (HAR). However, it’s important to say that some have held better than others, particularly Sibanye Stillwater (SSW) and DRDGOLD (DRD), due to a well-received trading statement and an upgrade, respectively.

Local Stocks

Exxaro Resources (EXX)

Exxaro released a trading statement today, where the midpoint came out at R13.71, against an expected midpoint of R16.28. Subsequently, the stock has seen a drastic drop before its earnings, and it’s likely to see further pressure today.

Naspers (NPN)

Naspers seems to have found support around R79, which is likely helped by Tencent’s (700) first day of moving sideways. We see this as a possible trade with decent risk-to-reward, and recommend keeping an eye on Naspers, as it could potentially have a bounce by Monday, especially if Tencent is able to reach HK$445 again.

Truworths International (TRU)

Truworths released a trading statement, which, while not stellar, was enough to cause a decent bounce, as the market flocked to buy it. This correlates with upward movement in other apparel stocks like Foschini (TFG) and Pepkor (PPH).

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

The U.S. market had a huge drop yesterday, with the S&P 500 diving from around 7480 points to almost 7320, following escalatory rhetoric from President Trump. We also saw average to disappointing numbers from the many earnings reports that came out, which painted a bleak image for the overall market. The software sector remains the sole ray of sunlight in the market, as it managed to squeeze out a move to the upside. Going into the day, U.S. government bond yields are rising again, making them a safe option relative to the riskier equity market. We also recommend keeping a close watch on the Dollar Index (DXY), as it will play a decisive role in the commodity market’s direction today.

Software

Software had a mixed bag of earnings yesterday, with Meta (META) and Qualcomm (QCOM) performing poorly on their earnings. At the same time, Microsoft (MSFT) managed to beat all expectations and is likely to have been a main contributor to the sector’s good performance today. We also see other stocks, such as ServiceNow (NOW), Adobe (ADBE), and Workday (WDAY), continue to perform well and go well past previous highs. Meanwhile, Oracle (ORCL) is still lagging behind and merely going sideways, which makes us believe that it’s likely to fall again if the market continues to drop.

Boxer (BOX)

Boxer was upgraded by Absa to overweight, with a target price of R90, an increase of 17%. We saw a very similar action by Investec recently, which shows that there is interest in Boxer.

Glencore (GLN)

Glencore received a double upgrade today. One by Investec with a target price of R140, the other by Standard Bank, with a target of £6.6, a difference of 17% and 21% respectively. With a metal space somewhat in the green, a very diversified miner like Glencore should see benefits.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market is a somewhat greener place in commodities and a mixed bag in equities, compared to yesterday’s opening, with rotation being the name of the game. We see the U.S. market rotating into software and consumer staples, while Asia is rotating out of Korea and Japan, and into Hong Kong and China. The day is also loaded with heavy hitters on both the earnings and economic data fronts, which should, all in all, make for an interesting session.

Tencent (700)

Tencent has benefitted greatly from the current rotation into China and Hong Kong, going up by more than 4% since yesterday. The company has made a great rotation into the Chinese A.I. sector, and subsequently, we’re likely to see gains in the copper industry, as A.I. tech is heavily dependent on the commodity for data centre construction. So keep an eye out for diversified miners like Glencore (GLN), as well as the usuals, Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

Local Stocks

Valterra (VAL)

Valterra released its earnings earlier today, with numbers that outperformed expectations by a good margin. As such, we expect it to have a good day.

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

Naspers and Prosus are likely to see gains due to Tencent’s (700) gains. When taking Valterra’s (VAL) earnings into account, it wouldn’t surprise us if we saw a gold drop, as funds are directed towards Naspers and Prosus, as well as Valterra.

Kumba Iron Ore (KIO)

Kumba Iron Ore received its first target price from Standard Bank today, set at R320, which is an increase of 19% from yesterday’s closing price.

Today’s aftermarket is loaded with heavy-hitting earnings, as well as the Fed interest rate decision and FOMC statement, which will have a huge impact on the global market.

SoFi is a U.S. fintech and money lender, with activities ranging from student loans to insurance and credit cards.

After-Market Earnings

Microsoft (MSFT)

Microsoft is one of America’s largest software companies, and its earnings are likely to have an impact on the sector, which is currently on the receiving end of a rotation in the broader tech sector.

Meta Platforms (META)

Meta is another member of the so-called ‘Magnificent 7’. Like Microsoft (MSFT), it’s considered to be a software company, but Meta is more diversified, with significant activity in A.I., communications, and advertising markets.

Qualcomm (QCOM)

Qualcomm is a U.S. based tech company involved in the development of software, A.I., and hardware, including semiconductors.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We start the day in a sea of red as expectations of interest rate hikes by the Fed soar, with Citadel Securities, one of America’s top firms, expecting an increase of 25 basis points by the end of the week. Meanwhile, the situation in the Middle East fails to improve, as neither side commits to serious negotiations, making the oil market even more unpredictable.

Software

Yesterday we saw a rotation into the software sector, as it saw a 3% growth, while the semis and the market as a whole took a downturn. But we see a general upward trend in the sector, as it continues to make higher lows, with $96 as the main level to watch on the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV). Regarding individual stocks, ServiceNow (NOW) seems to have broken the flag yesterday, most likely due to the company’s good earnings figures coming through. SoFi (SOFI) is another interesting stock, which has been going sideways for some time now, and with earnings scheduled for tomorrow, it’s likely to move in one direction or the other.

Local Stocks

Boxer (BOX)

Boxer released a trading statement in the morning, with a mixed bag of results. While the company is suffering from a deflationary environment, it has shown decent volume growth and market share gain. The margins are also holding steady, and new stores are opening. As the stock is currently on a downward turn, we recommend keeping an eye out for when it consolidates. To that end, we see the previous consolidations at R70 and R74 as the levels to look out for.

Platinum Group Metals

Platinum group metals are currently at a low point, but with a possible resurgence of internal combustion automobile manufacturing on the horizon (following the end of the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine), and increasing industrial demand, metals like platinum, palladium and rhodium make for a good long-term investment.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market opens on the downside, as we see red nearly everywhere. The U.S. tech sector saw the inverse correlation between the semis and software sectors change for a day, as both dropped. At the same time, a weaker Rand and weakness in the metals space are expected to put significant pressure on our mining- and export-driven economy. As such, we expect a quiet session today as a prelude to a more eventful week for the local market, as many of the major local stocks are scheduled to release production figures and earnings, starting next Monday (27th July).

Software

Between semis and softwares, it was the latter that saw the more significant drop yesterday. While ServiceNow’s (NOW) earnings on Wednesday saw it beat expectations by a slight margin, it seems not to have been enough to make a change for the sector, or the stock. We believe that if ServiceNow breaches the $88 level, it could go further down, into the low 80s, before finding support. Another notable underperformer is Oracle (ORCL), which just seems to be unable to make a turnaround, despite receiving a 10-year software contract from the Pentagon yesterday. It’s currently at 2024 levels, and the selling seems not to be done just yet.

Local Stocks

Aspen Pharmacare (APN)

Aspen was downgraded to sell by the Standard Bank. While the target price has barely changed, with a marginal 2% change in the green, it could cause the stock to see a drop today.

Discovery (DSY)

Discovery stands out for its performance yesterday, as it was about to go up, even touching R260 at one point, before closing the session at R255. It’s the strongest of the local options at the moment.

Sanlam (SLM)

Sanlam had another bad day yesterday, closing the day at R84. This could ironically be a blessing in disguise, as R84 has been a buying interest level, and as such, it could have a bit of a bounce.

Verizon is the largest telecommunications company in the U.S., and the second largest worldwide.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today we see what could be the beginnings of a turnaround for gold, as it gives back some of yesterday’s gains, while the platinum groups open flat or in the red. The flat and down openings are also a theme in the broader market, both in the West and on our side of the world. Interestingly, Asia seems to be doing well, with Nikkei 225 (Japan), KOSPI (Korea) and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) all in the green today. With commodities dropping and retailers taking hits in broad market sell-offs, we recommend keeping a close eye on the interest rate decision scheduled at 15:00 today, as it could determine where our market goes from here.

Software

Softwares took a hit yesterday, following ServiceNow’s (NOW) earnings. It’s worth keeping an eye on the sector in the near future, with the upcoming earnings from Microsoft (MSFT) next Wednesday (29th July), which could act as a short-term catalyst and bring a rotation out of semis and into softwares.

Tencent (700)

Tencent sees a bit of green today, even touching 2% growth at one point, before dropping back down to 1%. This could be the cause for some optimism, as we could see it retest the HK$460 and the subsequent HK$480 again. We believe that any further upside would require a proper catalyst, and the most likely candidate is the upcoming earnings on Wednesday, 12th August.

Local Stocks

Blue Label (BLU)

Blue is on our watchlist, as it has managed something of a comeback, finding new lows before breaking swing highs. We see R8.80 as the next level, which could see the stock test R9.0-9.25 again.

South32 (S32)

South32 sees another round of massive growth for a fifth day in a row, though interestingly, it didn’t leave a gap this time. There could be a shorting opportunity if it reaches R55-56, as a drop could see the stock close some or all of the gaps between R45 and R51.

AngloAmerican (AGL)

AngloAmerican released its production numbers earlier, displaying decent numbers overall. But most interestingly, it reported a significant cost cut in copper production, which should help push the company up.

Earnings & Economic Data

The interest rate decision at 15:00 is probably the most interesting item today, as it’s the most impactful and somewhat unpredictable. Yesterday’s CPI figures were quite hot, while the officials have had a rather hawkish tone as of late, which makes it all the harder to predict whether the interest rate goes up or down. Either way, the consumers and retailers will be the first to feel the effects.

After-Market Earnings

Intel (INTC)

Intel is the third-largest microchip designer and manufacturer, whose earnings have previously displayed the ability to move the semiconductor sector.

Newmont (NEM)

Newmont is a major American gold miner. With the price of gold falling, its earnings -particularly its forward-looking statements- should be worth keeping an eye on if you have any interest in gold.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market is a far more colourful one, as we see an unusual, simultaneous growth in oil and precious metals. The former is in large part due to a new round of trade route disruptions in the Middle East, as the Houtis once again threaten to block the southern entrance to the Red Sea. There’s also movement in both directions, in a variety of sectors and markets, as geopolitics, important earnings and key economic data come together to create a no doubt interesting day at the market, and overall, we expect the rise in gold, PGMs (Platinum Group Metals), and Oil to help push the JSE up today.

Tencent (700)

Hong Kong is down by around 1.5% today, following trade restrictions on A.I. tech between the U.S. and China. Companies like Alibaba (BABA) and Baidu(BIDU) have seen similar drops, while Tencent is down by around 6.6% today. This is strange, as there have been no headlines or catalysts to explain such a sharp drop compared to other Chinese tech giants. This is highly likely to cause a bad day for Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX), and we expect to see a minimum drop of 2%.

Software

Yesterday, we saw the continuation of the inverse correlation between software and semiconductors, as wins in the semis coincided with drops in software again. Adobe (ADBE) and Workday (WDAY) were downgraded to underweight by Morgan Stanley, which could have soured the sentiment on the sector, though individually, they performed relatively well, all things considered. As for today, ServiceNow’s (NOW) earnings should be closely watched, as its performance could go either way and will likely play a pivotal role in the sector’s direction in the near future.

Goldminers

Gold sees growth for the fourth day in a row, and with the overnight push. As a result, we speculate that goldminers such as AngloGold (ANG), Harmony (HAR), and Sibanye-Stillwater (SSW) will have a decent day today.

Aspen Pharmacare (APN)

Aspen’s report yesterday seemed more positive than negative. But word of supply chain constraints seems to have been enough to cause a 7.3% drop, bringing it to a previous swing-low at R144. We see R142.5 as the level to look out for, as going below it could cause a drop to R140 or lower.

Today’s quite stacked on three fronts, and we recommend watching South Africa’s CPI figures closely, as they are likely to impact tomorrow’s interest rate decision.

Alphabet, colloquially known as Google, is a diverse tech company, known primarily for its search engine and YouTube. But the company also deals with A.I., software, cloud storage and more.

Texas Instruments (TXN)

Texas Instruments is a multinational Semiconductor manufacturer, based in the U.S.

International Business Machines (IBM)

IBM is a U.S. multinational tech and tech research company, operating in a variety of fields in the broader tech sector.

Herenya’s bullish position on Sasol (SOL) and Workday (WDAY) might raise an eyebrow at first glance. After all, oil has dropped, and A.I. is the new darling of the tech sector. Have we lost the plot, or is there more to the story than meets the eye? We’d like to suggest the latter.

Sasol (SOL)

We have historically been quite bullish on the company. That position was rewarded when the conflict in the Middle East broke out, as Sasol’s stock virtually went through the roof. However, our current interest in Sasol is largely due to the global oil market fundamentals, and not so much the company’s performance.

Since the beginning of the war, over a billion barrels of oil have been “lost” due to disruptions in production, as the oil couldn’t be sent anywhere. This prompted a significant draw from the strategic oil reserves all over the world to fill some of the gaps. As such, the total pent-up demand can roughly be calculated to be as high as 1.5 billion barrels of oil, which will have to hit the market at some point.

This would take a significant amount of time, even if the Strait of Hormuz were to open right now, as tankers can take upwards of 3 months to reach their destinations. In summary, the shortage of oil, the market demand, the logistics of oil transportation, the national demand to refill oil reserves, and the unclear end to the conflict lead us to believe that oil will see a significant bounce that could carry Sasol to the R300 range.

Nasdaq & Workday (WDAY)

Our interest in software stocks comes from the necessity and convenience of their products. Software companies like Workday and Microsoft (MSFT) will more likely integrate A.I. into their services than allow A.I. to replace them. That makes them fundamentally valuable. Meanwhile, A.I. companies are failing to produce the profit expected of a sector as large as they are, which creates uncertainty in the chip manufacturers and the banks that have invested heavily in the creation and expansion of A.I. infrastructure.

It’s with this understanding that we look at Workday and see its human resources and payroll software as a fundamentally valuable and stable stock. And as we’re seeing a consolidation pattern in the Workday charts, we believe the stock is going to see a trend change in the future, which, with the right risk management, could be a great investment opportunity.

By extension, this also creates an opportunity to short Nasdaq. The latest bout of growth in the index is heavily concentrated in a very few massive A.I. and microchip stocks. Thus, any significant rotation into software or other tech sectors would likely come at their cost, which would send the Nasdaq plummeting.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s market in the U.S. was eventful, with many ups and downs, as the S&P 500 touched both the upper and lower levels several times before closing almost flat. We also see a clear rotation in the U.S. tech market, with semiconductors down 6.2% while software continued to rise. With the new quarter having just started, it’ll be most interesting to see where things go during the month, which could possibly set the pace for the rest of the quarter. In the commodity market, we see platinum and palladium in the green, while the other metals start in the red. Curiously, oil could continue its drop in the mid to long term, as some reports indicate an oil surplus in the coming years.

Softwares

Softwares had a great day yesterday, being on the winning end of a rotation, which could have been caused by a successful announcement from Meta (META), boosting the sector. Regarding individual stocks, Microsoft (MSFT) is currently resting at $384, breaking the $380 level of resistance, though not by much. Meanwhile, Adobe (ADBE) seems to be turning its fortune ever since its earnings in early June. With a gap to close, all the way at $218, we believe Adobe warrants a closer look. Other software stocks with good performance include but are not limited to: Workday (WDAY), Salesforce (CRM), and Meta.

Local Stocks

South32 (S32)

South32 had a great day yesterday, following the sale of its aluminium assets. However, it has dropped by around 4.7% overnight, as Australia seems to have taken the opportunity for profit-taking.

Aspen Pharmacare (APN)

Aspen has been trading well and touched R160 yesterday. This brings it back to the same ballpark as April of last year, before it saw a significant drop. With that gap closed, it seems to be gaining momentum again and might be of interest to you.

Economic Data

U.S. NFPs (Nonfarm Payrolls) are scheduled at 14:30 SAST today, and to put it simply: higher results could lead to an interest rate hike, while lower numbers could be bad for the dollar and good for commodities. The U.S. market will also be closed tomorrow, due to a public holiday.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s FOMC report was predictably hawkish and not what the market was hoping for; in conjunction with the expected interest rate hike by October of this year, it has contributed to a rise in bond prices. We also saw huge volatility in the U.S. market, with the S&P 500 going to a hair above 7470 points before bouncing back and finding support around 7540. So when President Trump signed an interim deal with Iran to end the war, the market took it very positively amidst all the day’s chaos. Today is also the closing day for a number of futures contracts, including but not limited to S&P 500 E-Mini, S&P Midcap E-Mini and Nasdaq 100 E-Mini.

Softwares

Software stocks took a hit yesterday, with Microsoft (MSFT) dropping by about 4%, getting close to previous swing lows, while Adobe (ADBE) failed to bounce and went down to weekly levels not seen since 2018. In its current predicament, Adobe needs to hold around the $200 level for it to be able to move higher.

Tech

The broader tech sector is also struggling as well, with semiconductors performing the best but still ending the day at a loss, while SpaceX (SPCX) saw its first red day, with around a 5% loss. It remains to be seen if they continue on the same trajectory, but it’s important to note that tomorrow is a public holiday in the U.S., so the last bit of volume for the week should come in today.

Local Stocks

Valterra Platinum (VAL)

Valterra is on the watchlist as Berenberg upgraded it to buy, with a new target price of R1542, which is roughly 10% higher than before.

Glencore (GLN) & Anglo American Plc (AGL)

Berenberg also downgraded Anglo American to hold, with a new target price of 37.25. Meanwhile, Glencore wasn’t directly upgraded, but it did receive praise from Berenberg, which could cause it to go up during the day.

Today’s most interesting events are the Swiss National Bank interest rate decision at 09:30 and the Bank of England interest rate decision at 13:00.
