The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We open to a red and yellow market, as yesterday’s CPI figures contributed to a new round of strength in the Dollar Index (DXY), at the cost of commodities and equities. We see weakness across the board in the metal space, which has led to a very risk-off sentiment, particularly as the market waits for the U.S. announcement regarding copper. For now, we expect a low-volatility market until a major catalyst shows up. We also recommend keeping an eye on the dollar inflation rate and the U.S. PPI numbers scheduled to be released later today, as it’s most likely to be the day’s catalyst.

Tencent (700)

Tencent had dropped by quite a bit following yesterday’s earnings. It was able to beat most expectations by a slight margin, but the capex (capital expenditure) figures were quite high, leading to uncertainty amongst investors and the subsequent drop. If the stock manages to hold at around the previous lows of HK$432, it could potentially make a comeback in the near future; otherwise, a test of HK$420 will be in order.

As a direct result of Tencent’s situation, we see a rotation out of Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX), which at one point were down by over 7%. We see R800 and R790 as the levels to keep an eye on, where Naspers could potentially bounce, while for Prosus we’ve marked R710 and R700.

Local Stocks

The commodities have been in the driving seat of the market for the last few days. But with uncertainty in their immediate future, we recommend keeping an eye on the banks, as the likes of Standard Bank (SBG) and Absa (ABG) could become the play today.

Sibanye-Stillwater (SSW)

Sibanye was upgraded to buy Citibank, with a target of $13.50 (around R54.5), which is an increase of 21%.

DRDGOLD (DRD)

DRD released a decent trading statement today, which, in conjunction with the good performance of the last few days, could see it go further up. However, it’s worth taking into account that the company usually suffers from low trading volume, and its high capital expenditure and scale make it more sensitive than other gold miners to shifts in the price of gold. So trade carefully!

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday was another quiet day in the U.S., as the market continues to consolidate in the absence of a sufficient catalyst. Pakistan announced progress towards a deal, but the radio silence from all other parties and the old familiar pattern of deals and escalations have led to a very muted reaction from the market. With very little else in terms of news headlines, all eyes are fixed on the U.S. core CPI numbers coming out later today, as it can be a sufficiently potent catalyst to get the market moving in one direction or the other.

Tencent (700)

Tencent reports earnings today, which is disappointing, as its share price has continued to drop by over 2% overnight. However, it’s important to note that it has been forming higher lows since June, which suggests the stock could still bounce. As for the earnings themselves, Tencent has shown increasingly tighter margins between results and expectations, which has led to a muted market reaction. But if you see a larger gap between the results and expectations today, expect a similarly large movement in the ALSI, as a huge win could lead to investments out of banks and locals and into Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) and vice versa.

Local Stocks

With Shoprite (SHP), Northam Platinum (NPH), and Impala (IMP) all releasing trading statements today, we see PGMs (Platinum Group Metals) and retailers as the name of the game.

Shoprite (SHP)

Shoprite released an earnings statement today, with decent numbers that keep it at the top of the retail space. With it being near the top of its range, it’ll be interesting to see if the market sees this as an opportunity to take profits, or if the numbers are good enough to see the stock soar higher.

Northam Platinum (NPH)

Northam Platinum also released a trading statement with great numbers today. We recommend keeping an eye out to see how it trades in the morning, as there’s currently no consensus on it, and it could go either way.

Ex-Dividends & Economic Data

U.S. Core CPI numbers scheduled for 14:30 today are especially important to keep an eye on, for the possible effect on interest rates and its function as a catalyst for the broader market.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s market was uneventful, as the U.S. market continued to move sideways and consolidate. There has been very little news from the Middle East, which could potentially signal a move towards peace, but we prefer to wait for more concrete evidence. Interestingly, we see a mixed bag of movement in the commodity space, with gold and platinum giving up some gains, while remaining higher than Friday. Meanwhile, oil is up by more than 6%, due to no particular headline, which should translate to a good opening for Sasol (SOL) and the likes.

Tencent (700)

Tencent had a very red day today, dropping by around HK$10, which should have a negative impact on Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) openings today. However, we recommend keeping an eye on the stock, as its earnings tomorrow (Wednesday, 9th August) could be a major catalyst. For now, HK$480 is once again the important level to look out for.

Telkom (TKG)

Telkom received its third upgrade since last month today. This time raised to overweight by Morgan-Stanley, with a target price of R70, an increase of 22%. As such, we expect it to have a good opening.

Pepkor (PPH)

Pepkor has swing trade potential, with R22 being the mark to look out for, as we could see a quick rise to R23 if it breaks. It’s also expected to release a trading update soon, which could lead to further growth if the update looks good. As such, we see Pepkor as one of the best local stocks in the retail sector, together with Boxer (BOX) and Shoprite (SHP).

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday was an interesting day at the market, with several interesting earnings and equally interesting results and market reactions. It was also a clear profit-taking day in the American market, as it jumped up massively, reaching new all-time highs, before closing at the lows. A so-called ‘bearish pinball’. The commodities, meanwhile, continue to perform well, while U.S. tech struggles, though bounces in the near future are highly likely, if the recent patterns are anything to go by.

Tencent (700)

Tencent is down by quite a bit today, dropping almost all the way down to HK$ 480. As we’ve mentioned, Tencent has its earnings next week on Wednesday (12th August), which could result in further profit-taking before the earnings. But the earnings report itself is likely to be an upward catalyst for the company, which would have a huge impact on Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

JSE Top 40 Index (ALSI)

The Top 40 Index is currently the best way to gauge the local market trends. We see gold and PGM (Platinum Group Metals) miners making up around 20-25% of the ALSI. Banks, meanwhile, are seeing pressure, while telcos like Telkom (TKG) and MTN Group (MTN) are being dragged over the coals. Overall, it looks like a profit-taking day in the ALSI, with miners as the main winners.

Sappi (SAP)

Sappi came out with its earnings today, showing middling numbers, with expectations of better Q4 being the one saving grace. It will be worth keeping an eye on to see how the market reacts to it.

Blu Label (BLU)

Blu will have its earnings this month, and the trading statement will be most worth keeping an eye on.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market is a somewhat greener place in commodities and a mixed bag in equities, compared to yesterday’s opening, with rotation being the name of the game. We see the U.S. market rotating into software and consumer staples, while Asia is rotating out of Korea and Japan, and into Hong Kong and China. The day is also loaded with heavy hitters on both the earnings and economic data fronts, which should, all in all, make for an interesting session.

Tencent (700)

Tencent has benefitted greatly from the current rotation into China and Hong Kong, going up by more than 4% since yesterday. The company has made a great rotation into the Chinese A.I. sector, and subsequently, we’re likely to see gains in the copper industry, as A.I. tech is heavily dependent on the commodity for data centre construction. So keep an eye out for diversified miners like Glencore (GLN), as well as the usuals, Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

Valterra (VAL)

Valterra released its earnings earlier today, with numbers that outperformed expectations by a good margin. As such, we expect it to have a good day.

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

Naspers and Prosus are likely to see gains due to Tencent’s (700) gains. When taking Valterra’s (VAL) earnings into account, it wouldn’t surprise us if we saw a gold drop, as funds are directed towards Naspers and Prosus, as well as Valterra.

Kumba Iron Ore (KIO)

Kumba Iron Ore received its first target price from Standard Bank today, set at R320, which is an increase of 19% from yesterday’s closing price.

Today’s aftermarket is loaded with heavy-hitting earnings, as well as the Fed interest rate decision and FOMC statement, which will have a huge impact on the global market.

Meta is another member of the so-called ‘Magnificent 7’. Like Microsoft (MSFT), it’s considered to be a software company, but Meta is more diversified, with significant activity in A.I., communications, and advertising markets.

Qualcomm (QCOM)

Qualcomm is a U.S. based tech company involved in the development of software, A.I., and hardware, including semiconductors.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We start a new week, following a period of consolidation in the U.S. market, which only started to show momentum downwards on Friday. The semiconductors in particular seemed to have played a decisive role, as they dropped significantly and dragged the rest of the market with them. The action in the commodity market seems to be on the same track; however, metals are struggling while oil goes up to $85. and beyond, making the likes of Sasol (SOL) into an increasingly interesting option. But overall, we expect today to be a mostly calm prelude to the upcoming earnings and data releases, which are bound to shake up the local and international markets.

Tencent (700)

Tencent is up 3.25% from Friday’s close, a success shared by the broader Hong Kong market, with Hang Seng up by around 1.75%. It seems to have found a short-term bottom at HK$420, and is currently resting below the critical HK$480 level. It’s significant, as it has shown a tendency to slow down as the stock gets closer to the HK$480, and we expect it to see further movement to the upside if it’s able to close above it. Meanwhile, Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) are performing similarly to Tencent, with them having found a floor and appearing to be on the rise. The two also have gaps to close, which mark them as a potential investment.

Local Stocks

South32 (S32)

South32 had a good performance on its production numbers today, and it has subsequently gone up by over 4%. If it gains any momentum today, it’s likely to reach R48-50.

Mondi (MNP)

Mondi has had 2 up days in a row, finally breaking out as predicted. We believe R180 is very much a possibility.

Sasol (SOL)

With oil prices rising, Sasol is likely to continue seeing gains today. We recommend keeping an eye on this stock, especially as the company’s scheduled to release a production update tomorrow.

Earnings & Economic Data

Today’s relatively quiet in terms of earnings and economic data, with a Japanese holiday being the most noteworthy event. But the rest of the week is bound to be more interesting, with South Africa’s CPI figures coming out on Wednesday, and the likes of Tesla (TSLA) and Intel (INTC) having earnings during the week.

AMC is the world’s largest movie theatre chain based in the U.S., which seems to have a large short interest at the moment.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday was a mostly quiet day, with little in terms of new news or geopolitical tensions. We saw the upwards momentum continue in the U.S., with the S&P 500 nearly reaching our weekly level of resistance before dipping slightly. The commodity market is mostly in the green, with the notable exception of oil, which is dropping towards $70 again. We expect a quiet session today, with the gold and platinum groups being the name of the game as they receive flows from Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

Tencent (700)

Tencent has dropped into the HK$460 range, making it increasingly likely it will close the gap to the HK$450-440 range before bouncing back and forming an inverted head-and-shoulders. We expect Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) to move in similar directions, and until the trend line is broken, we recommend selling on every move higher.

Kumba Iron Ore (KIO)

Kumba was upgraded to neutral by J.P. Morgan, with a target price of R314. With it trading near swing lows of June 2025, it might be worth looking into. However, Kumba can be risky, with wide spreads and inconsistent volumes, so trade carefully.

Telkom (TKG)

Telkom had a great day yesterday, following the upgrade from Absa. We believe it still has some room to grow. The telcos seem to be performing well in general, so we recommend keeping an eye on the sector as a whole.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We start the day with strength in U.S. bonds and oil after the U.S. walked back the oil sanctions waiver on 21st June. The rise in U.S. bonds is a sign that the market is once again concerned about further escalations and subsequent interest hikes, which explains the pressure we see in equities and the metal spaces. Interestingly, we saw headlines of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) buying gold, which could explain why it’s holding relatively well today.

Chinese Tech

We see U.S. software, semiconductors, and memory stocks continue to drop as the rotation into China continues today. Hang Seng is up 3.3%, and the likes of Tencent (700) and Alibaba (BABA) are up by 4-10%. If the rotation continues, we could see further upside in China, with Alibaba and Tencent being able to test $120-130, and even further if rotations are directed into A.I. as well as Chinese technology.

Local Stocks

Sasol (SOL)

Sasol should benefit from the increased oil prices, but it’s lagging behind other international oil companies in terms of growth. If you were able to buy into it last night, expect the real volume and movement to come in at around 15:30, when the U.S. market opens.

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

With golds and PGMs (Platinum Group Metals) taking hits and the banks being rotated out of, we expect Naspers and Prosus to see most of the gains in our market. Tencent’s (700) growth should also help further boost both companies’ performances.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market seems to have taken on a risk-off sentiment, as low volumes were the name of the game yesterday, both here and in the U.S. We also heard news of two oil tankers being attacked in the Middle East. This is likely to have helped put a damper on the market, particularly in the metals space, though the effect has been relatively minor, with oil barely in the green.

Looking ahead to the rest of the day, we expect a quiet session, and with no noteworthy economic data and only a few big earnings on the horizon, we believe that, barring dramatic news, this week is a good opportunity to get your admin work done.

Tencent (700)

Tencent is up roughly by another 2%, from yesterday’s more dramatic 4.5%. This shows a rotation back into Hong Kong again, but Tencent’s action hasn’t been great, as it touched HK$480 before dropping down to HK$460, which creates a bearish candle. In practical terms, this is likely to give Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) a 1% boost at the start. But that doesn’t guarantee continuous buys. We could see a repeat of yesterday, with a green start that fizzles out after 2-3 hours, so keep a close eye on it if you intend to trade any of those stocks.

Gold

$4,200 remains the level to look out for, as gold was able to touch, but not break, it, yesterday. We currently see gold as something of a no-man’s land; the graphs look like a bull flag, but the dollar remains very strong, which makes it very plausible for gold to re-test the $4,100s again.

Local Stocks

Absa Group (ABG)

Absa was downgraded by two different firms today. Goldman Sachs cut it down to neutral, with a target price of R240. Avior in the meantime set it to underperform, with the target price of R228.15.

Investec (INL)

Investec was upgraded to outperform by Avior today, with R167.50 as the new target price. It’s a dramatic 21% increase, and subsequently, we recommend putting it on your watchlist.

FirstRand (FSR)

Firstrand had a very day yesterday and closed at the highs. We could see the rotation in the banking space continue today, in which case FirstRand would see even more gains today.

Ex-Dividends

The following stocks are set to go Ex-div tomorrow: British American Tobacco (BTI), Netcare (NTC) Sirius Real Estate (SRE), Stor-Age Property REIT (SSS), and Vukile Property Fund (VKE).

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today, we see a wave of movement in commodities, with oil going into the red by 1%, while much of the metal space is in the green. We see similar growth in the U.S. market, with software stocks continuing to rise, while semiconductors were able to turn around the sell-off and nearly close the gap between Friday’s close and Monday’s opening. We expect a similar action for the day, with fund managers buying into semis, as today is both a month-end and a quarter-end.

Tencent (700)

Tencent seems to have found a bottom, at least for the short term, at around HK$410. This should be a relief for anyone holding Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX), and we recommend keeping an eye on Tencent, as it will have to break the HK$440 or HK$450 before it can see proper growth again. It’s worth noting that the Tencent share buyback is still ongoing. Meanwhile, lobbying firms from the U.S. are cutting ties with Chinese companies like Tencent and Alibaba (BABA) following new restrictive laws.

Local Stocks

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

Naspers and Prosus had a nice bounce after earnings yesterday, with Naspers seeing a 5% growth. Considering Tencent’s performance, it most likely was just a minor contributing factor at most, which makes it all the more interesting to see where it goes today. We believe that R840 is the level to look out for, as it has been a significant level of support before, and if it holds without breaking, R860-880 will be on the table. Prosus is in a similar situation, with R710 as the level of support and R750 as the level of resistance to look out for.

AngloGold Ashanti (ANG)

AngloGold traded very well in the U.S., which is strange, as it’s not due to any headlines or increases in gold price. It could be worthwhile to keep an eye on to see whether the sells of yesterday continue or reverse and catch up with the U.S. on our side.

Earnings & Economic Data

China released its manufacturing PMI report earlier today, and beat expectations by a small margin . The Canadian and Hong Kong markets will be closed tomorrow due to public holidays, meaning that stocks like Tencent (700) will not be tradable.

After-Market Earnings

Nike (NKE)

Nike has been performing poorly in the last few months, and it’s currently down to 2014 levels. We intend to keep an eye out to see if the company is able to make a turnaround.
