The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s market was uneventful, as the U.S. market continued to move sideways and consolidate. There has been very little news from the Middle East, which could potentially signal a move towards peace, but we prefer to wait for more concrete evidence. Interestingly, we see a mixed bag of movement in the commodity space, with gold and platinum giving up some gains, while remaining higher than Friday. Meanwhile, oil is up by more than 6%, due to no particular headline, which should translate to a good opening for Sasol (SOL) and the likes.

Tencent (700)

Tencent had a very red day today, dropping by around HK$10, which should have a negative impact on Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) openings today. However, we recommend keeping an eye on the stock, as its earnings tomorrow (Wednesday, 9th August) could be a major catalyst. For now, HK$480 is once again the important level to look out for.

Local Stocks

Telkom (TKG)

Telkom received its third upgrade since last month today. This time raised to overweight by Morgan-Stanley, with a target price of R70, an increase of 22%. As such, we expect it to have a good opening.

Pepkor (PPH)

Pepkor has swing trade potential, with R22 being the mark to look out for, as we could see a quick rise to R23 if it breaks. It’s also expected to release a trading update soon, which could lead to further growth if the update looks good. As such, we see Pepkor as one of the best local stocks in the retail sector, together with Boxer (BOX) and Shoprite (SHP).

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s market was a very eventful one, with earnings, data, and a massive bounce in the U.S., where the S&P 500 made a full comeback from Wednesday’s drops. Today we see a lot of greens in commodities and equities, though gold seems to be struggling again, as the dollar regains some of its lost ground. We also saw Amazon (AMZN) soar after its earnings, while software continued to perform well for a fourth day in a row, which should make for an overall interesting session today.

S&P 500 Index

The S&P 500’s drop on Wednesday was in part due to the FOMC and interest rate decisions by the Fed. But there was also the squeezing of a large A.I. hedge fund, first to the downside, and then back up, which will likely serve as a cautionary tale in the future, once more details come out. Subsequently, the index has made a comeback from the drops of Wednesday, and is currently in the green, so we hope you were able to catch that rally!

Tencent (700)

Tencent is interestingly able to stay in the green, despite the flows out of Hang Seng (China), following yesterday’s rally in U.S. tech. Hang Seng itself is currently flat, which is somewhat reassuring, and makes Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) the potential play today. As for Tencent itself, HK$480 remains the level of resistance to look out for, with the upcoming earnings on 12th August having great potential to serve as the catalyst to break that level. This could once again be used to play with Naspers and Prosus.

Local Stocks

Sasol (SOL)

With the dollar going up and oil coming down, it’s unlikely that Sasol will be able to break R200 today. With a real possibility that it drops down to R180, it might not be the worst opportunity to take some profit today.

AngloGold Ashanti (ANG)

The dual-listed gold miners performed rather well in the American market, with AngloGold doing the best out of the bunch, growing by around 2%. Its Q2 numbers are scheduled to come out around noon today. This could also be interesting if you’re holding shares in any of the other gold miners, as they tend to move in tandem.

Earnings & Economic Data

Today has a few interesting earnings, mainly in the oil sector, while China’s manufacturing PMI is the biggest point of economic data to look into.

Moderna is an American pharmaceutical company, specialising in the treatment of RNA viruses with mRNA vaccines.

Chevron (CVX)

Chevron is one of the largest oil companies in the U.S., with a multinational operation in over 180 countries.

Exxon is the largest oil company in the U.S., as well as the world, with a large number of well-known brands and operations.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We open the day to a market rally in commodities and equities, following the cancellation of planned strikes over the weekend. Oil is the main loser today as it dropped by 6%, while gold and PGMs (Platinum Group Metals) show signs of a short-term bounce, which, in conjunction with Tencent’s (700) performance, helps create a risk-on sentiment for this morning session. However, we still recommend caution, as the market rally is behind cancelled strikes, rumoured to be due to a munitions shortage, rather than substantial progress towards peace. At the same time, Hormuz remains closed and further escalations are still on the table.

Gold

Our belief remains that gold needs to break $4200 to see proper movement to the upside. But looking at the charts, we believe that a short-term bounce is a very real possibility, which makes gold and gold miners an investment opportunity to keep an eye on, for those interested. As far as miners go, Harmony (HAR) had a standout performance last week, with significant pumps on Wednesday and Friday that were somewhat unexpected. We speculate that if it’s able to break the R280 level, we could see a retest of R290-300.

Local Stocks

Valterra (VAL)

The PGMs are expected to move up this morning, supported by weakness in the dollar and strength in commodities. We see Valterra as the most attractive option, with R1160 as the level to break before retesting R1200.

Aspen (NPN)

Aspen received the go-ahead on the development and production of a potentially world’s first oral anti-HIV pill. But with last week’s reports of supply chain issues, and Friday’s downgrade, we see the stock as something to keep an eye on until it finds support.

Real Estate

Standard Bank came out with a trio of changes in the real estate sector today. Redefine Properties (RDF) was raised to buy, while NEPI Rockcastle (NRP) and SA Corporate Real Estate (SAC) were cut to hold.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market is a far more colourful one, as we see an unusual, simultaneous growth in oil and precious metals. The former is in large part due to a new round of trade route disruptions in the Middle East, as the Houtis once again threaten to block the southern entrance to the Red Sea. There’s also movement in both directions, in a variety of sectors and markets, as geopolitics, important earnings and key economic data come together to create a no doubt interesting day at the market, and overall, we expect the rise in gold, PGMs (Platinum Group Metals), and Oil to help push the JSE up today.

Tencent (700)

Hong Kong is down by around 1.5% today, following trade restrictions on A.I. tech between the U.S. and China. Companies like Alibaba (BABA) and Baidu(BIDU) have seen similar drops, while Tencent is down by around 6.6% today. This is strange, as there have been no headlines or catalysts to explain such a sharp drop compared to other Chinese tech giants. This is highly likely to cause a bad day for Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX), and we expect to see a minimum drop of 2%.

Software

Yesterday, we saw the continuation of the inverse correlation between software and semiconductors, as wins in the semis coincided with drops in software again. Adobe (ADBE) and Workday (WDAY) were downgraded to underweight by Morgan Stanley, which could have soured the sentiment on the sector, though individually, they performed relatively well, all things considered. As for today, ServiceNow’s (NOW) earnings should be closely watched, as its performance could go either way and will likely play a pivotal role in the sector’s direction in the near future.

Goldminers

Gold sees growth for the fourth day in a row, and with the overnight push. As a result, we speculate that goldminers such as AngloGold (ANG), Harmony (HAR), and Sibanye-Stillwater (SSW) will have a decent day today.

Aspen Pharmacare (APN)

Aspen’s report yesterday seemed more positive than negative. But word of supply chain constraints seems to have been enough to cause a 7.3% drop, bringing it to a previous swing-low at R144. We see R142.5 as the level to look out for, as going below it could cause a drop to R140 or lower.

Today’s quite stacked on three fronts, and we recommend watching South Africa’s CPI figures closely, as they are likely to impact tomorrow’s interest rate decision.

Alphabet, colloquially known as Google, is a diverse tech company, known primarily for its search engine and YouTube. But the company also deals with A.I., software, cloud storage and more.

Texas Instruments (TXN)

Texas Instruments is a multinational Semiconductor manufacturer, based in the U.S.

International Business Machines (IBM)

IBM is a U.S. multinational tech and tech research company, operating in a variety of fields in the broader tech sector.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We start a new week, following a period of consolidation in the U.S. market, which only started to show momentum downwards on Friday. The semiconductors in particular seemed to have played a decisive role, as they dropped significantly and dragged the rest of the market with them. The action in the commodity market seems to be on the same track; however, metals are struggling while oil goes up to $85. and beyond, making the likes of Sasol (SOL) into an increasingly interesting option. But overall, we expect today to be a mostly calm prelude to the upcoming earnings and data releases, which are bound to shake up the local and international markets.

Tencent (700)

Tencent is up 3.25% from Friday’s close, a success shared by the broader Hong Kong market, with Hang Seng up by around 1.75%. It seems to have found a short-term bottom at HK$420, and is currently resting below the critical HK$480 level. It’s significant, as it has shown a tendency to slow down as the stock gets closer to the HK$480, and we expect it to see further movement to the upside if it’s able to close above it. Meanwhile, Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) are performing similarly to Tencent, with them having found a floor and appearing to be on the rise. The two also have gaps to close, which mark them as a potential investment.

Local Stocks

South32 (S32)

South32 had a good performance on its production numbers today, and it has subsequently gone up by over 4%. If it gains any momentum today, it’s likely to reach R48-50.

Mondi (MNP)

Mondi has had 2 up days in a row, finally breaking out as predicted. We believe R180 is very much a possibility.

Sasol (SOL)

With oil prices rising, Sasol is likely to continue seeing gains today. We recommend keeping an eye on this stock, especially as the company’s scheduled to release a production update tomorrow.

Earnings & Economic Data

Today’s relatively quiet in terms of earnings and economic data, with a Japanese holiday being the most noteworthy event. But the rest of the week is bound to be more interesting, with South Africa’s CPI figures coming out on Wednesday, and the likes of Tesla (TSLA) and Intel (INTC) having earnings during the week.

AMC Entertainment (AMC)

AMC is the world’s largest movie theatre chain based in the U.S., which seems to have a large short interest at the moment.

Herenya’s bullish position on Sasol (SOL) and Workday (WDAY) might raise an eyebrow at first glance. After all, oil has dropped, and A.I. is the new darling of the tech sector. Have we lost the plot, or is there more to the story than meets the eye? We’d like to suggest the latter.

Sasol (SOL)

We have historically been quite bullish on the company. That position was rewarded when the conflict in the Middle East broke out, as Sasol’s stock virtually went through the roof. However, our current interest in Sasol is largely due to the global oil market fundamentals, and not so much the company’s performance.

Since the beginning of the war, over a billion barrels of oil have been “lost” due to disruptions in production, as the oil couldn’t be sent anywhere. This prompted a significant draw from the strategic oil reserves all over the world to fill some of the gaps. As such, the total pent-up demand can roughly be calculated to be as high as 1.5 billion barrels of oil, which will have to hit the market at some point.

This would take a significant amount of time, even if the Strait of Hormuz were to open right now, as tankers can take upwards of 3 months to reach their destinations. In summary, the shortage of oil, the market demand, the logistics of oil transportation, the national demand to refill oil reserves, and the unclear end to the conflict lead us to believe that oil will see a significant bounce that could carry Sasol to the R300 range.

Nasdaq & Workday (WDAY)

Our interest in software stocks comes from the necessity and convenience of their products. Software companies like Workday and Microsoft (MSFT) will more likely integrate A.I. into their services than allow A.I. to replace them. That makes them fundamentally valuable. Meanwhile, A.I. companies are failing to produce the profit expected of a sector as large as they are, which creates uncertainty in the chip manufacturers and the banks that have invested heavily in the creation and expansion of A.I. infrastructure.

It’s with this understanding that we look at Workday and see its human resources and payroll software as a fundamentally valuable and stable stock. And as we’re seeing a consolidation pattern in the Workday charts, we believe the stock is going to see a trend change in the future, which, with the right risk management, could be a great investment opportunity.

By extension, this also creates an opportunity to short Nasdaq. The latest bout of growth in the index is heavily concentrated in a very few massive A.I. and microchip stocks. Thus, any significant rotation into software or other tech sectors would likely come at their cost, which would send the Nasdaq plummeting.

We start the day with further deterioration in the Middle East situation, following another series of U.S. strikes on Iranian coastal targets. This has led to oil rising for a third day in a row, with Brent at $85, already causing significant disruptions and drops in the petroleum supply chain, with China’s oil refinery output dropping to 2020 levels. Yesterday’s CPI report is something of a silver lining, as below-expectations results dampen concerns about a July interest rate hike by the Fed. But the increasing oil prices and the Fed’s hawkish tone could mean that the market might be getting ahead of itself in pricing in a dovish path.

East Asia

We’ve seen a rise in East Asian shares following yesterday’s CPI results and the subsequent trimming of bets on Federal Reserve interest-rate hikes. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) is back as the top stock benchmark, with Tech and A.I. as the best performers in general. In local terms, Asia trading higher could lead to a firmer opening market, as traders and investors turn their attention to upcoming offshore earnings.

China

China’s economic data from earlier today was a mixed bag. The GDP failed to reach the official target, while retail sales and industrial production surpassed their respective goals. This is likely to prompt a short-term stimulus and other support policies from Beijing.

Shoprite (SHP)

Shoprite might be interesting to keep an eye on in the long term, as the company’s media and marketing business could lead the grocery giant to a significant rise in revenue this year.

Karooooo is a dual-listed South African software company, with the ticker KARO on Nasdaq. It’s known for its tracking software, used in the transportation sector.

United is a U.S. airliner with domestic and international flights. Its performance today could also be used to gauge the state of the consumer market.

We open the day to a slightly weaker Rand, but a greener overall market than yesterday, particularly in the commodity sector. Oil is up, with West Texas Intermediate at $80, and Brent Crude at $85, as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, following a U.S. blockade of Hormuz. This puts fear of inflation and the subsequent counter-response of interest rate hikes back on the menu. On the South African front, the market seems mainly interested in local energy stocks, with very little interest in anything else. As such, we expect the JSE to have a quiet opening today, and the U.S. market to start on the back foot.

Metal Space

The commodity market opens in the green today, with the metal space more or less going up, or remaining in place from where we left off yesterday. Precious metals in particular are holding onto key support levels, such as $4000/oz for gold, suggesting that miners will open flat today. But it’s important to note that the weakness in spot metal prices could end up hurting the stocks.

Banking is the theme of today’s earnings, as several heavy hitters in the global banking sector will have their earnings today. Otherwise, the U.S. CPI report is the main release of the day. The rest of the week will also be eventful, with important data from China scheduled for release tomorrow, which could potentially impact the global market.

J.P. Morgan (JPM)

J.P. Morgan Chase is a U.S.-based multinational bank. It’s the world’s largest bank by market capitalisation.

Citigroup (C)

Citigroup is an American multinational investment bank.

Goldman Sachs (GS)

Goldman Sachs is another multinational investment bank based in the U.S., with over a century of operations.

Bank Of America (BAC)

Bank of America is an American multinational bank and the second largest in the world after J.P. Morgan.

Ericsson (ERIC)

Ericsson is a Swedish telecommunications company known for inventing Bluetooth and for being an industry leader in 5G technology.

Today’s opening market drops in the red once again, as oil prices surge, following a new round of escalation in the Middle East. In response, Iran has declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, with no end date specified. This has once again fueled speculation that the Fed will raise interest rates to fight inflation, making precious metals unappealing, as, unlike assets such as Treasury bonds, they do not offer yields in the short to medium term. It remains to be seen whether this bout of escalation will be long-lasting or fizzle out quickly, but we nonetheless expect a slow start to the day and the week.

U.S. Treasury Bonds

U.S. bonds have dropped following escalations and the subsequent jump in the oil price. But there’s more, as Japanese policy makers have signalled a clear focus on domestic ventures, encouraging a return of funds and investments to Japan. This is significant, as Japan holds considerable amounts of assets offshore, including U.S. treasury bonds, the sale of which could devalue the dollar and pressure the bond yields.

Yesterday was a great day for the commodity market, as U.S. nonfarm payrolls came in well below the estimated 102,000. This predictably led to a weakness in the dollar (which now rests at $100.6) and strength in the commodity market, especially with the metals, as they made a killing, and will likely continue to stay in the green. Going into the day’s session, it’s important to remember that the U.S. market is closed due to a public holiday. This will reduce the day’s trading volume and have some impact on Monday’s session too.

Sasol (SOL)

Sasol has been dropping more or less since mid-June due to lower oil prices. This has the hallmarks of a market overreaction, as lingering problems in the supply chain keep oil refineries near peak profitability, particularly in the U.S., where Sasol also operates heavily. It’s also important to take into account that the conflict in the Middle East has led to heavy draw on strategic oil reserves everywhere. The subsequent refilling means that the demand for oil may not disappear for some time.

Local Stocks

Sanlam (SLM)

Sanlam received an upgraded for the second time in two weeks. This time to overweight, with a new target price of R117.5, an increase of 25%. Taking the stock’s recent performance into account, we speculate that R95-96 could be in the cards if it manages to break through the R92 mark.

Thungela Resources (TGA)

Thungela received a new rating of neutral today, with a target price of R100. While the company has struggled for most of June, it could see some relief, as Japan has announced a switch from natural gas to coal power plants, citing supply chain disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

Pick N Pay (PIK)

Pick N Pay has integrated an A.I. assistant ‘Penny’ into its shopping app ‘Asap!’, which, unlike its rival app, will not be locked behind a subscription. The full impact of the new addition will likely be felt in the mid to long term, so it might be of interest to keep an eye on the company as a whole.

With the U.S. market closed due to the 4th of July public holiday, today will be quiet on the earnings and economic data front.
