The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market is a somewhat greener place in commodities and a mixed bag in equities, compared to yesterday’s opening, with rotation being the name of the game. We see the U.S. market rotating into software and consumer staples, while Asia is rotating out of Korea and Japan, and into Hong Kong and China. The day is also loaded with heavy hitters on both the earnings and economic data fronts, which should, all in all, make for an interesting session.

Tencent (700)

Tencent has benefitted greatly from the current rotation into China and Hong Kong, going up by more than 4% since yesterday. The company has made a great rotation into the Chinese A.I. sector, and subsequently, we’re likely to see gains in the copper industry, as A.I. tech is heavily dependent on the commodity for data centre construction. So keep an eye out for diversified miners like Glencore (GLN), as well as the usuals, Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

Local Stocks

Valterra (VAL)

Valterra released its earnings earlier today, with numbers that outperformed expectations by a good margin. As such, we expect it to have a good day.

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

Naspers and Prosus are likely to see gains due to Tencent’s (700) gains. When taking Valterra’s (VAL) earnings into account, it wouldn’t surprise us if we saw a gold drop, as funds are directed towards Naspers and Prosus, as well as Valterra.

Kumba Iron Ore (KIO)

Kumba Iron Ore received its first target price from Standard Bank today, set at R320, which is an increase of 19% from yesterday’s closing price.

Earnings & Economic Data

Today’s aftermarket is loaded with heavy-hitting earnings, as well as the Fed interest rate decision and FOMC statement, which will have a huge impact on the global market.

SoFi Technologies (SOFI)

SoFi is a U.S. fintech and money lender, with activities ranging from student loans to insurance and credit cards.

After-Market Earnings

Microsoft (MSFT)

Microsoft is one of America’s largest software companies, and its earnings are likely to have an impact on the sector, which is currently on the receiving end of a rotation in the broader tech sector.

Meta Platforms (META)

Meta is another member of the so-called ‘Magnificent 7’. Like Microsoft (MSFT), it’s considered to be a software company, but Meta is more diversified, with significant activity in A.I., communications, and advertising markets.

Qualcomm (QCOM)

Qualcomm is a U.S. based tech company involved in the development of software, A.I., and hardware, including semiconductors.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We start a new week, following a period of consolidation in the U.S. market, which only started to show momentum downwards on Friday. The semiconductors in particular seemed to have played a decisive role, as they dropped significantly and dragged the rest of the market with them. The action in the commodity market seems to be on the same track; however, metals are struggling while oil goes up to $85. and beyond, making the likes of Sasol (SOL) into an increasingly interesting option. But overall, we expect today to be a mostly calm prelude to the upcoming earnings and data releases, which are bound to shake up the local and international markets.

Tencent (700)

Tencent is up 3.25% from Friday’s close, a success shared by the broader Hong Kong market, with Hang Seng up by around 1.75%. It seems to have found a short-term bottom at HK$420, and is currently resting below the critical HK$480 level. It’s significant, as it has shown a tendency to slow down as the stock gets closer to the HK$480, and we expect it to see further movement to the upside if it’s able to close above it. Meanwhile, Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) are performing similarly to Tencent, with them having found a floor and appearing to be on the rise. The two also have gaps to close, which mark them as a potential investment.

Local Stocks

South32 (S32)

South32 had a good performance on its production numbers today, and it has subsequently gone up by over 4%. If it gains any momentum today, it’s likely to reach R48-50.

Mondi (MNP)

Mondi has had 2 up days in a row, finally breaking out as predicted. We believe R180 is very much a possibility.

Sasol (SOL)

With oil prices rising, Sasol is likely to continue seeing gains today. We recommend keeping an eye on this stock, especially as the company’s scheduled to release a production update tomorrow.

Earnings & Economic Data

Today’s relatively quiet in terms of earnings and economic data, with a Japanese holiday being the most noteworthy event. But the rest of the week is bound to be more interesting, with South Africa’s CPI figures coming out on Wednesday, and the likes of Tesla (TSLA) and Intel (INTC) having earnings during the week.

Pre-Market Earnings

AMC Entertainment (AMC)

AMC is the world’s largest movie theatre chain based in the U.S., which seems to have a large short interest at the moment.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday was a mostly quiet day, with little in terms of new news or geopolitical tensions. We saw the upwards momentum continue in the U.S., with the S&P 500 nearly reaching our weekly level of resistance before dipping slightly. The commodity market is mostly in the green, with the notable exception of oil, which is dropping towards $70 again. We expect a quiet session today, with the gold and platinum groups being the name of the game as they receive flows from Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX).

Tencent (700)

Tencent has dropped into the HK$460 range, making it increasingly likely it will close the gap to the HK$450-440 range before bouncing back and forming an inverted head-and-shoulders. We expect Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) to move in similar directions, and until the trend line is broken, we recommend selling on every move higher.

Local Stocks

Kumba Iron Ore (KIO)

Kumba was upgraded to neutral by J.P. Morgan, with a target price of R314. With it trading near swing lows of June 2025, it might be worth looking into. However, Kumba can be risky, with wide spreads and inconsistent volumes, so trade carefully.

Telkom (TKG)

Telkom had a great day yesterday, following the upgrade from Absa. We believe it still has some room to grow. The telcos seem to be performing well in general, so we recommend keeping an eye on the sector as a whole.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

We start the day with strength in U.S. bonds and oil after the U.S. walked back the oil sanctions waiver on 21st June. The rise in U.S. bonds is a sign that the market is once again concerned about further escalations and subsequent interest hikes, which explains the pressure we see in equities and the metal spaces. Interestingly, we saw headlines of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) buying gold, which could explain why it’s holding relatively well today.

Chinese Tech

We see U.S. software, semiconductors, and memory stocks continue to drop as the rotation into China continues today. Hang Seng is up 3.3%, and the likes of Tencent (700) and Alibaba (BABA) are up by 4-10%. If the rotation continues, we could see further upside in China, with Alibaba and Tencent being able to test $120-130, and even further if rotations are directed into A.I. as well as Chinese technology.

Local Stocks

Sasol (SOL)

Sasol should benefit from the increased oil prices, but it’s lagging behind other international oil companies in terms of growth. If you were able to buy into it last night, expect the real volume and movement to come in at around 15:30, when the U.S. market opens.

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

With golds and PGMs (Platinum Group Metals) taking hits and the banks being rotated out of, we expect Naspers and Prosus to see most of the gains in our market. Tencent’s (700) growth should also help further boost both companies’ performances.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market seems to have taken on a risk-off sentiment, as low volumes were the name of the game yesterday, both here and in the U.S. We also heard news of two oil tankers being attacked in the Middle East. This is likely to have helped put a damper on the market, particularly in the metals space, though the effect has been relatively minor, with oil barely in the green.

Looking ahead to the rest of the day, we expect a quiet session, and with no noteworthy economic data and only a few big earnings on the horizon, we believe that, barring dramatic news, this week is a good opportunity to get your admin work done.

Tencent (700)

Tencent is up roughly by another 2%, from yesterday’s more dramatic 4.5%. This shows a rotation back into Hong Kong again, but Tencent’s action hasn’t been great, as it touched HK$480 before dropping down to HK$460, which creates a bearish candle. In practical terms, this is likely to give Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) a 1% boost at the start. But that doesn’t guarantee continuous buys. We could see a repeat of yesterday, with a green start that fizzles out after 2-3 hours, so keep a close eye on it if you intend to trade any of those stocks.

Gold

$4,200 remains the level to look out for, as gold was able to touch, but not break, it, yesterday. We currently see gold as something of a no-man’s land; the graphs look like a bull flag, but the dollar remains very strong, which makes it very plausible for gold to re-test the $4,100s again.

Local Stocks

Absa Group (ABG)

Absa was downgraded by two different firms today. Goldman Sachs cut it down to neutral, with a target price of R240. Avior in the meantime set it to underperform, with the target price of R228.15.

Investec (INL)

Investec was upgraded to outperform by Avior today, with R167.50 as the new target price. It’s a dramatic 21% increase, and subsequently, we recommend putting it on your watchlist.

FirstRand (FSR)

Firstrand had a very day yesterday and closed at the highs. We could see the rotation in the banking space continue today, in which case FirstRand would see even more gains today.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today, we see a wave of movement in commodities, with oil going into the red by 1%, while much of the metal space is in the green. We see similar growth in the U.S. market, with software stocks continuing to rise, while semiconductors were able to turn around the sell-off and nearly close the gap between Friday’s close and Monday’s opening. We expect a similar action for the day, with fund managers buying into semis, as today is both a month-end and a quarter-end.

Tencent (700)

Tencent seems to have found a bottom, at least for the short term, at around HK$410. This should be a relief for anyone holding Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX), and we recommend keeping an eye on Tencent, as it will have to break the HK$440 or HK$450 before it can see proper growth again. It’s worth noting that the Tencent share buyback is still ongoing. Meanwhile, lobbying firms from the U.S. are cutting ties with Chinese companies like Tencent and Alibaba (BABA) following new restrictive laws.

Local Stocks

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

Naspers and Prosus had a nice bounce after earnings yesterday, with Naspers seeing a 5% growth. Considering Tencent’s performance, it most likely was just a minor contributing factor at most, which makes it all the more interesting to see where it goes today. We believe that R840 is the level to look out for, as it has been a significant level of support before, and if it holds without breaking, R860-880 will be on the table. Prosus is in a similar situation, with R710 as the level of support and R750 as the level of resistance to look out for.

AngloGold Ashanti (ANG)

AngloGold traded very well in the U.S., which is strange, as it’s not due to any headlines or increases in gold price. It could be worthwhile to keep an eye on to see whether the sells of yesterday continue or reverse and catch up with the U.S. on our side.

Earnings & Economic Data

China released its manufacturing PMI report earlier today, and beat expectations by a small margin . The Canadian and Hong Kong markets will be closed tomorrow due to public holidays, meaning that stocks like Tencent (700) will not be tradable.

After-Market Earnings

Nike (NKE)

Nike has been performing poorly in the last few months, and it’s currently down to 2014 levels. We intend to keep an eye out to see if the company is able to make a turnaround.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Friday’s session in the U.S. saw further drops for the semiconductors, while the software sector took a driving role in the market. We also saw a series of strikes between the U.S. and Iran over the weekend, which have had a relatively minimal effect on oil prices, with the market seeming to focus less on headlines and more on concrete data, such as oil flows or the number of ships still in transit. Going into the day, we see a mix of reds and greens in the commodities, but our market is up by a hair short of 70 basis points, which could translate to a risk-on start to the session.

Microsoft (MSFT)

As previously mentioned, the software sector was the centre of attention in the U.S., with a mix of rotations and bottom buying bringing considerable gains. Microsoft, in particular, stood head and shoulders above the rest, with a huge trade volume (at around 186 million) and gains. It’s on our watchlist, as it’s currently resting at $372 and could see further growth if it breaks the $380 mark. As for the lower range, we’ve set it at Thursday’s lows, which is roughly around $349. It’s important, however, to note that this is still a slightly risky idea, and we recommend that you research it yourself and don’t take any risks if it starts dropping again.

Local Stocks

Sanlam (SLM)

Sanlam was raised to overweight by Morgan Stanley today, with a target price of R144, which is a 24% increase from Friday’s close at R86.

BHP Group (BHP)

BHP had a good day in Australia, which should also lead to it having a good day in South Africa. It might also help bring some risk back to diversified miners as a whole, so you might want to keep an eye out.

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

Naspers and Prosus had decent earnings reports today, with Naspers in particular beating expectations on nearly all fronts. Tencent (700) also had a decent performance on the market today, with it reaching 3% growth at one point, which should translate to a good day for Naspers and Prosus.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Friday was a rough day for metals, following an overreaction by the market amid fears that the U.S.-Iran deal might fall through. We also heard news of President Trump threatening to launch new strikes against Iran over the weekend, which makes us believe that we’re seeing a continuation of the old reliable. With back-and-forths occurring simultaneously with ongoing peace talks, as the market seems increasingly used to. We subsequently speculate that the move upward will be tame when the final peace deal is signed. We could even see things go down due to profit-taking.

Tencent (700)

Tencent drops by another 1.5-2% today. It seems that news of the early implementation of its new A.I. service does little to turn around its fortunes. This does not bode well for Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX). They rely heavily on the Hong Kong giant, and are likely to struggle, as Tencent has lost nearly all of its gains from the beginning of June. It’s worth noting that this coincides with a greater trend, where Japan and South Korea receive the buys, while Hang Seng (Hong Kong) is sold.

Local Stocks

Goldfields (GFI)

Goldfields tanked on Friday, as the future of its lease on Ghana’s Tarkawa mine is at risk. We expect gold miners like AngloGold Ashanti (ANG) and Harmony (HAR) to bounce today. But it’s unlikely for Goldfields to bounce as far, as their drop is due to bigger factors than just the gold price.

Standard Bank (SBK)

We saw much of the flow go into banks on Friday, with most of them performing well, though some of the gains were lost near the end of the session. Standard Bank in particular traded near all-time highs, and it had a good pre-close update this morning. But with the stock trading at swing highs, this can used as a liquidity event. We recommend keeping a close eye on where things go today.

Mondi (MNP)

Mondi was removed from the FTSE 100 on Friday and moved to the FTSE 250. We expect it to bounce in the coming days to weeks.

South32 (S32)

South32 dropped on Friday, with R46 being a possibility if it continues to go down. But it has found support around this level before, which could be an opportunity to long, if you are a more adventurous trader. We recommend setting a stop-loss at the R48.0 mark.

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Today’s market opens in the green, as a deal to extend the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran was reached yesterday, Sunday, and is to be signed on Friday, 19th June. This has resulted in further drops in oil prices, indicating the market’s optimistic sentiment about the situation, which should put pressure on stocks like Sasol (SOL). We also see weakness in Tencent (700) today, which should lead Naspers (NPN) and Prosus (PRX) to fuel growth in the rest of the market, particularly in the commodity sector.

USD/Zar

The U.S. Dollar to Rand exchange rate has fallen below R16.2, which is a rather significant drop, as it brings it down to pre-war levels. We’ve seen a trend of lower and lower highs, beginning in late March, and should commodity prices continue to rise, we could see a drop to R16.0 and further.

Local Stocks

Mondi (MNP)

Mondi will be removed from the FTSE 100 next Monday, 22nd June, which could cause selling pressure on the stock, making it a decent buying opportunity.

Gold Miners

Gold miners stand to benefit from higher gold and lower oil prices. Along with diversified miners, we see gold as today’s best options, with companies like AngloGold Ashanti (ANG) and Harmony Gold (HAR) working as particularly strong options, while companies like DRDGOLD (DRD) are notably lagging behind the rest.

Diversified Miners

Like gold miners, diversified miners stand to benefit greatly from today’s strength across the metal space, with copper and iron in particular playing an important part. We recommend looking into the likes of South32 (S32) and BHP Group (BHG).

The following is a partial recap of the market analysis shared during today’s morning Discord call.

Yesterday’s market started in the green, only for it to drop past the lower weekly levels and make a slight comeback near the evening. Interestingly, the same movements occurred in oil, suggesting the downward moves were part of broad selling across most of the market. We also heard news of further strikes in the Middle East, with antagonising rhetoric from both sides, which contributes in part to our belief that the selling will likely continue into today.

Apple (AAPL)

Apple’s stock began dropping on Monday, after a disappointing Siri A.I. announcement on Sunday. It dropped by roughly another 3.5% yesterday. With the company breaking several previous lows, we speculate that it has more room to drop, with the $280 mark likely being in the cards for Apple.

Local Stocks

Naspers (NPN) & Prosus (PRX)

Naspers and Prosus benefited greatly from Tencent’s (700) performance yesterday. With Tencent surprisingly opening with over 2.5% in the green, we expect Naspers to break through R900, and Prosus to test the R780 level.

Mondi (MNP)

Mondi continues to struggle and is set to underperform according to BNP. This, added on top of Mondi’s replacement in the FTSE100 by Investec (INP), might make it worth selling now and buying after its exclusion.

Earnings & Economic Data

Today’s most interesting events are the Core CPI and Oracle earnings reports, both of which take place in the afternoon.
